I watched the Ch8 news tonight on 8.1, it was not in HD.

Really? How can you tell? I'm basing my thought on seeing the difference between Channel 8 on DirecTV and then switching over to OTA HD. World of difference.

I have an aquaintance at ESPN and he explained to me that HD is so much more expensive because everything in the chain has to be HD quality. Cameras, trucks, all the uplinks to the satellite and downlinks. I had asked him because the only Indy car race in HD is the Indy 500 but none of the other races in the series are. He told me if it doesn't have the ratings it won't be in HD simply because it takes a big chunk of money to broadcast.
So maybe the cameras are HD capable but are the CTN trucks and all the other equiment?? Anyway, I'm just repeating what my friend told me so if I heard him wrong someone in the know can correct me.

The Iowa game this year was on VersusHD.

Don't confuse Digital with HD. The crappily compressed MPEG-2 Stream that DirecTV gives us for our locals is digital, but far far from HD.

The OTA HD signal you pick up from the locals is all digital, but probably not HD. The reason it looks better over HD is because HD is all digital, whereas the non-HD stuff is good ol' fashioned analog.

When ch8.1 is not in HD mode you will get a 4x3 picture, when it in HD you will get a 16x9 picture. Plus the picture is not nearly as good.
