I realize it is going to be difficult but please try to keep this from becoming a big political discussion. Let's try and discuss the story itself, not your thoughts/opinions on Chet Culver the politician.

Can we make comparisons to how potential candidates and former governors (Branstad) would react in this situation?

I would be much more excited if it was Chuck speaking up.

Why are politics being involved at all? Sports should be devoid of political meddling. There are far more important things to worry for elected officials than conference realignment.

That's not seeing the big picture. Universities are worth a heck of a lot in economic development for the state, and both ISU and UofI bring a LOT to the state of iowa. Remember that conferences are also not just about athletics, but academics as well. Were either to lose affiliation with a top tier conference, it would negatively effect the whole state.

Get real. College athletics is a multi-million dollar industry and has an impact on the overall health of the university. You think that politicians should stay out?

Because this is about more than just sports.

2 things:

1) This conference realignment will affect all levels of an institution (research money, admission rates, etc), and since we are a public school the state has a vested interest in Iowa State's financial well being.

2) I agree that elected officials at a congressional level have larger matters to attend to, but IMO state officials should 100% be looking out for their state schools.

If Iowa State gets booted out of a major conference there will be repercussions throughout the state of Iowa.

People would be getting really ****** if he didn't do anything.

Look at it simply like this, it's an issue that has MAJOR ramifications on a MAJOR state university, and in turn, the entire state. He should be sticking his nose in.

I guess this will test the therory in law and politics of never asking a question without knowing the answer ahead of time. Does the "Big Lug" know something ahead of time?!?!

I agree - this kind of makes us look desperate, like having your mom ask someone to Homecoming for you. I think it would be simpler to just let it be. It's a business, so he has to be involved, but it still is a little too much.
