Here is my take on that article.

Wednesday: Bill Self tells Frankamp "Conner you are welcome to stay but you probably won't see many minutes this year."

Thursday: Frankamp tells Self : " I quit. "

Friday: Self tells media: "He is a great young man and I wish he had stayed but I have guards out the wazoo. Now I still have plenty of perimeter players AND an open scholly."

I didn't read all 4 pages of this thread, but I'm sure most know he beat MattThomas in the high school 3-ball contest. Although we are set this year for shooting guards, it would be an entertaining thought to consider how this sharpshooter could fit in Fred's program.

Funny to see Fran get flack, he was KU's best guard in the big12/ncaa tourney last year. Even playing out of position at PG. This is a bigger deal than his mpg last year indicate, guard, specifically PG is their biggest ?

He scored 0 points in 2 minutes in the Big 12 tourney. You must be misremembering. Frankamp had some nice offensive moments in the ncaa tourney but was never going to be more than a spot minute guy. He is too slow to play defense at this level. Sad to see a local kid not able to make his dream come true where he wanted it to happen but I wish him nothing but the best. Wouldn't be surprised to see him end up at Wichita State.

This seems crazy to me, but where Fred has us now, I don't think Frankamp is good enough for ISU if he was even eligible to transfer to ISU from KU.

I do wonder about KU's shooting though. For a significant stretch last year KU had a poor 3p% and that allowed teams to pack the inside. To me, Self seemed determined to put his best athletes out there for the defense but then sacrificed the skill on offense to space out their opponent. If those other players don't shoot well from the perimeter it could be a chink in their armor this year.

Speaking of racist....

I had heard, even back when Kansas was recruiting him, that his dad was going to be an issue, a helicopter flying closely above Conner's head. So this is fairly unsurprising, if a little disappointing. I always hoped Self would experiment with Conner in some more lineups last year, for a little more shooting/spacing, but the tough schedule didn't leave much time for experimentation, and the defense was a significantly bigger issue than the offense anyway.

Regardless, hopefully he finds a good fit where he can fill it up; I think he's capable of being a very nice scorer on a team that gives guards a little more offensive freedom. Even more than that, hopefully he can shake his dad off his shoulder and move away a little further; it'll be best for him in the long run.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you go to KU, you had better be in the "1 & done" category, or you will probably never start.

All things being equal between a guy like Frankamp and a top 10-20 player that is slotted to be 1 & done, the 1 & done will be showcased and get the lion's share of the minutes.

That helps KU recruit 1 & done's, but it should also hurt a little in the guys they recruit that aren't expecting to be 1-2 year college players.

Not a problem if you're Diallo or Monk, but if I'm Mitchell Ballock, I'm taking this into account.

Eh, no. How many one and done starters has KU had in the 9 years of the one and done rule, five? Selby, Henry, Wiggins, Embiid and I'll throw in McLemore who redshirted a full season before leaving after one season of play.

All this means is that you'd better think long and hard about going to a major program like KU if you are undersized for your position or not an elite level athlete. All this means is that every player that goes to a big school better be realistic about their abilities, their talent level, their size and their competition they will face on their team for minutes. Frankamp is a 6' SG who could play a little PG out of necessity. He was terrible defensively and was smaller than the vast majority of guys he was asked to guard. MAYBE in 2-3 years he could have developed his defensive skills enough to see more meaningful minutes but he was never going to get taller or quicker. He was simply never going to be KU's best choice for starting because they will ALWAYS have someone big, strong and fast that can shoot available.

I basically considered Frankamp to be the next Tyrel Reed, a short white Kansas kid that would try hard, make the smart play and contribute off the bench for the vast majority of his career.

Frankamp was a great high school shooter but was not big or fast enough to be able to get himself and open look or shoot over the top of good defense. His best skill was his shooting and he was not better than a mediocre shooter at this level due to his lack of size and athleticism. There's nothing wrong with realizing your limitations.

i wonder if he was overranked due to his early commitment or if he just needs some time to develop with regular minutes. #37 national ranking aint something to sneeze at.

Custer is basically a poor man's Frankamp. ISU doesn't need two of the same guy sitting on the bench.

Twocoach being twocoach

It's way too early to write the book on either one of these guys. I agree, we have no need for him, but for all we know, Frankamp will be a poor man's version of Custer.

All i know is I have an inch and 10 pounds on him and I'd get absolutely destroyed playing 30+ D1 games. Let alone trying to guard anyone.

Say what? Apples and Oranges, my man. Custer is pass first pure PG, Frankamp was a short pure 2 shoved into a PG spot late because Tharpe was in the dog house and he couldn't hang at the 2 with the big kids.

We should see if Fennelly will let Brynn play for the men's team also based on this

KU better hope Devonte Graham pans out. They might really be wishing they had Clayton Custer as the season goes on.
