I doubt you have 384M of ram. That seems horribly low.

I guess you could have a 256M stick and a 128M stick.

Anyway, you need to find the speed and type of the memory, is this a homebuilt machine or is it a name brand?

Take the $100 you would spend on ram and buy a new cheap PC. The one you have now is about 4 years old and I wouldn't waste my money to try and upgrade.

It is entirely possible he has 384, although it would be laughable. Instead of buying more memory for an AMD 3300, even though it is dirt cheap, you should just buy a new PC.

Oh come on, if all he's doing is checking email and surfing the web, 1.81Ghz is more than enough to handle it. In that case, upgrading RAM would be a good move.

However, if you're doing anything more than surfing the web, it probably is time to invest in a new computer, or at least a new processor. It all depends on what you use your computer for, and how good of shape all the other parts are in. Never fear- we're happy to help you figure out what's best for you!

It's also possible that you have 512mb but some is allocated to an integrated video chipset - quite common.

That is fine, now go to newegg.com and type in pc3200 and buy some of that.
Well, that's not all you have to do... :skeptical:

Go here:

Newegg.com - 1GB, DDR 400 (PC 3200), Desktop Memory, Memory, Computer Hardware

You'll want to pick one of those. I don't know what your price range is. I really recommend picking something with a "heat spreader" (the colored metal panels), especially if your computer case doesn't have at least three fans in it, but it's not necessary. If you can't afford modules with heat spreaders, don't worry about it.

Buy one of those for every RAM slot you have in your computer (even ones that already have RAM in them). So, if you have four slots total, and two of them currently have modules in them, then try and buy four new modules. Again, you don't have to, it's just ideal.

Kingston, G-Skill, Mushkin, OCZ, and Crucial are all good brand names. PNY is okay.
