Kyle Kempt transfered because of a coaching change and change in offensive philosophy. Do you look down on him?
Alex Mackall left Rutgers because they got a transfer who was better than him that locked down the 125 spot for them. Do you look down on him?
I don't necessarily look down on guys that want to transfer out, nor do I look down on guys that want to transfer in. They have to find their own path in life whether from making good decisions or poor decisions.
What I "look down on" is a person who takes the easy way out and doesn't want to work for something they desire. Did Kempt take the easy way out? I have no idea, but I doubt he left because things got too difficult for him. I would not support my kid's decision to transfer simply because of a coaching change and change in offensive philosophy. I would tell them it would be a chance to grow and expand their knowledge, become more well-rounded. That alone is not a good reason to transfer in my opinion. Kempt seems like a good enough kid and Campbell speaks highly of him. He obviously meshes well with our staff and the transfer has worked out for him. That's great and I'm happy for him.
Regarding Alex, if he saw a dead end in his wrestling career because of Suriano joining the team, then maybe it was a good decision for him. Do I like that his transferring to the Cyclones improves our team? Absolutely. However, what if we get Cashman or another recruit that sets the world on fire and is kicking Alex's ***? Will he look to transfer out? If I were a betting man, I would say yes.
I know that every circumstance is different. I understand that not every kid has the athletic and mental ability to be a champ. However, when your goal is in sight, it is no time to back off and not work hard to achieve it. I just felt that Colston was so close to his goal of being a starter. I'd be surprised if it's not for additional reasons.
For what it's worth, I also feel that Cael took the easy way out when he took the PSU job. I thought he was good enough to be a Gable type coach at ISU, but he thought it would be easier at PSU. Maybe I just get jilted too easily?
