125 - DNP, but went 3-2. Solid showing for Meza.

133 - 2nd. Showed grit to come back in his first 3 matches, couldn’t generate offense on Romney.

141 - 5th. Solid showing from JFrost, nearly beat Koderhandt which would have been a great win.

149 - 4th. Had Lovett on the ropes and couldn’t finish (just great wrestling from Lovett). Looked like a knee injury as he conceded the fall to Abas. Not good.

157 - 7th. Very low offensive output. Spent most of the weekend on a knee. Got beaten handily by Fish.

165 - DNP. Went 2-1, MFF after getting TF by Garvin. Hope he’s ok, injuries are piling up.

174 - DNP. Solid first match, followed by two clunkers.

184 - 6th. Made it to semis, ran into Keck, then MFF out. Was really good up to the semis. Hope he’s ok.

197 - 8th. Had moments, couple of tough matches, ran into a buzzsaw and quick tech by Cardenas, beat Voelker, then loses to Voelker handily in the 7th place match.

285 - DNP 3-2. Solid showing from Herrera, ran into a couple of bigger stronger guys.

Overall a fairly tough weekend in Vegas. Hope Ech avoided serious injury but it did not look good.

Could Ech’s injury solidify YB redshirt and both Ech and YB wrestling next yr….

Kind of crazy that after what feels like an absolutely horrible performance, the team still ended up 5th.

Below is a look of how we did from a national perspective. Looks like a team with 1 AA.

125 - losses to #24 and #10. No top 30 wins.
133 - win over #9 and #18. Loss to #12
141 - win over #33 and #26. Loss to #8. Then a bunch of forfeits so didn’t get much of a chance against other ranked opponents.
149 - Very close loss to #5 title contender. Unfortunate injury hope he’s ok.
157 - win over #23 and #29. Loss to #9 and UR.
165 - win over #28. Destroyed by #6 then ff out
174 - win over #22. Losses to 15 and UR.
184 - no ranked wins. Loss to #2 and Ff.
197 - win over #16. losses to #3, #12, #16.
285 - win over #23. losses to #3, #16

injuries, injuries, injuries. What in the hell is going on? Count all of the knee injuries: Euton, J Frost (healing), Casey, YB, Ech??...

J Frost had a great tourney, we need to recognize that. He should have won his last match, but I am super happy to see how he performed. Meza, he is tough, gonna be a good one. E Frost, he had some come from behinds, shows guts. I think that weight cut is brutal for him, but he is one tough kid. Ech, dammit man, I am hoping he is ok. My biggest disappointment was Paniro, he shows flashes of holy cows, then he fades out. Fish completely dominated him, which surprised me. MJ, I don't know, still puzzles me. I don't know why he is not at 174, Riggins, I really am not expecting much out of him. I am not sure what is up with Bockman injury. Carroll was sick all week, he is gonna be OK. And Peanut is going to be tough, his future is bright. This team is tough, just fighting the injury bug, and in a world that you gotta win today, it is tough.

The Ech injury could make this all a moot point, but feel I need to come clean...

I have been pretty vocal in the 'let them wrestle up' a weight camp. Generally, I think these days elite guys like we have do better on full feed and cutting too much leads to injuries and stamina problems. However, I think I'm changing my mind with this group.

Ech (assuming healthy) is a title contender at either 41 or 49. However, though he has improved tremendously, mat wrestling will always be his Achilles heel. At 41, he has the strength to mitigate that issue, but at 49 guys like Lovett (and probably Henson) can take advantage.

I had high hopes that Panario would open up his offense on full feed at 57. It seems he was much more aggressive during the freestyle season. For whatever reason, that has not translated to the folkstyle year. I hope his previous illness issues are not coming back as he seems more winded like his true freshman year. Maybe the cut back to 49 would do him some good shape wise?

Add to that it seems like the concussions are no longer a concern for Chittum since he is competing, it would allow us to get him back in the lineup at 57. Mind you this is not a criticism of JFrost as I still feel he could be a blood round/low AA, but we probably have higher ceiling with Ech/PJ/Cody.

Outside of vibes, there is no reason to think J Frost is an AA contender. Solid wrestler, NCAA Q for sure. Probably win a match or even 2.

As to the weight thing, I really think you have to look at body type. Ech, Paniro, and Chittum are all short and stocky. Very filled out already and just minimal room to actually grow.

Guys like Frost and Swiderski have much more room to fill out and out on actual good weight.

I agree with your points about body types and probably should have included that in my post. It is another reason I think the move down for Ech and PJ would be good.

As far as JFrost, I could list a dozen reasons, but you said right in your post he could probably win two matches. If brackets fall right, there is very little difference in that and blood round/low AA. Heck, he just had the #11 guy all but beat if not for a couple highly correctable mistakes. That puts him squarely in the conversation. The fact that I'm advocating moving him to the bench says a lot about our depth.

I’m probably in the minority here and I said it this weekend, is Ech 41, Paniro 49 and Chittum 57 a better lineup than JFrost 41, Ech 49 and Chittum 57?

Paniro showed very little in his matches and wouldn’t a weight cut possibly hurt his tank even more?

I say this fully realizing his ceiling is high at 149, but wrestling for SV is more often than not going to get you burned. If he starts to open it up I fully change my mind, I’m just not sure that’s who he is in folk style.

The answer to this is simple, Paniro is 100% a better option than Frost. Higher floor, higher ceiling without a doubt. His style is not as appealing, but that’s it.

Based solely off of this weekends performance, there was nothing to back this statement up. If you factor PJ'S performance from 2 years ago...maybe...?
