I made this up myself but I hope it's real.

THE 101 YEAR (GOOD) CURSE

The 100th year of Fenway, the Red Sox finished dead last in their division. That offseason, they made big improvements to the ballpark to start eliminating the out-of-date parts of Fenway. The 101st year of Fenway, the Red Sox won the World Series.

12 players turned down 1 year, $15.3 million QO's today. Of note, Russell Martin, James Shields and Max Scherzer (Scherzer is going to end up a Yankee...that's my bet anyway) are among them.

Cubs have apparently shown interest in Torii Hunter (one of ten teams).

Gross. Hunter isn't any good.

Batted .284 (2014), .304 (2013) and .313 (2012) the past 3 years. It'd be nice to have a veteran on the team.

I agree. Plus isn't he a great clubhouse guy and teammate. If a veteran with his resume can bring the kids along I'm all for it.

And we don't have to worry about Theo and Jed giving him like 5 years/60 million like Jimbo would have done.

Hunter is a good player but I saw some horrendous defensive stat that he would give up something like 18 runs a season at his position alone. So he definitely isn't the defensive stud he once was. I'm sure he'll go AL so he can DH.

Not so high on Hunter unless he's playing like platoon outfield and maybe mentoring some of our younger outfielders.

Cubs have been linked to this, but so have just about half of the teams in the NL:

Sources saying Jeremy Hellickson is likely to be traded this week by the Rays. It will be interesting to see what he goes for. Great pitcher with a high upside, BUT will his recent injury hurt his price?

Not sure if the Rays are interested in trading with the Cubs now or not.

Cubs are going to be linked with just about everyone with a pulse this offseason. Definitely will be a busy one.

My dream free agency is
- Jon Lester
- Russell Martin
- Brandon McCarthy
- Johnny Gomes

From the twitterverse, the rumors seem to be this currently...
- Lester is a top priority but no one is overly confident in the Cubs actually landing him
- Hamels would be fit but Philly's trade demands are insane, so not going to happen unless that changes BIG time
- Martin is the top position player want but he's looking for 5 years and $75-80 million
- A Carl Crawford trade is on the radar as potential fall back to Martin for veteran leadership/OBP
- There is mutual interest between Jason Hammel and the Cubs as a potential second tier starter pick up
- They have checked in on Andrew Miller (almost everyone has though)

So to sum up, it's going to be a busy winter! Lots of names thrown about and will be interesting to see what ends up shaking out.

I fear most Cub fans are expecting too much from this offseason though. I dream big but am not going to be shocked if we bow out of bidding wars for the top guys. This is still another 15-18 month process to accumulate the top end pitching and let the bats emerge in the MLB. Cubs don't have to get that top of the rotation arm this FA period. Lots of time to trade, or wait til next year when others like David Price and Johnny Cueto will be available potentially.

I think it would be the Cubs who would back away from that first, unless Theo has gone nuts and become a huge believer in ERA. Hellickson's a fly ball pitcher that doesn't really fit well in Wrigley in my opinion.

HOLY. ****.

Cubs in talks with the Nationals over Jordan Zimmerman.

Would be a HUGE get. Sounds like one of our middle infielders is involved in the potential deal.

Zimmerman has started 32 games the last three seasons, and isn't injury prone. Very consistent player.

Just look at his stats and you'll want this trade.

He's an Ace that will probably forever be given #2, #3 money. My guess is he'll be our #2 next year, #3 the year after

Of course I'm all over twitter and when I post a long list of rumors, this new one pops up immediately after.

This would be HUGE like you said. This dude is a stud. Young guy still at 28, would surely try and work an extension as part of the trade. Instantly gives you a 1-2 punch of Zimmermann and Arrieta that can compete with most any in the league.

GET IT DONE THEO/JED

Well the Cubs did think they could get a 28 year old potential ace by only offering up Javier Baez...

oh, you mean one of the top 10 prospects in all of baseball last year? Yeah, that's not an unfair offer for a guy who'll be a free agent in 12 months.

Nationals want a middle infielder, preferably a second baseman, who can start now, and be a backup short stop when Desmond needs a day off.

Does that not scream Baez?

I would be willing to trade Baez and our fourth or fifth best pitching prospect for Zimmerman. But no more than that.

So... the Cubs are willing to offer up one of the top 10 prospects in all of baseball last year for a guy who will be a free agent in 12 months? Tells me what I need to know about how much the Cubs brass truly values Baez.
