In an effort to become less of a homebody, I have been looking into joining social events /clubs / meetups for adults in the Cedar Rapids area. However, this is being more difficult than I imagined. I have checked out a couple websites, like meetup.com, but haven’t had much luck. I was curious if any Fanatics knew of a good website or resource I should check out or had personal recommendations. I know this is primarily driven by personal interests, but I will entertain any recommendation.

I've read about this site "Ashley Madison" or something like that in which you can meet other adults, you might look into it.

NAMBLA used to meet in an abandoned house in the Czech Village area...if you're into that sort of thing.

Made me think of this:

You might want to look into the Jaycees or Rotary Club depending on your interests. My brother has really done a lot with the Rotary Club and Chamber here in Ankeny. I joined a golf club because of my love for golf and has been great for the social side, since I work out of my house.

What are some hobbies/activities you like to do?

I have done a lot of different things over the years, however, the primary ones at the time are: exercising (lifting, running, racquetball, etc), gaming (video, board, card), and reading. I am not into golf.

Assuming you are somewhat fresh out of school, I faced the same problem when I moved to CR a couple years ago. I'd suggest getting involved with ImpactCR which is the young professionals group. I met a couple people who know a lot of people in CR and now I have a fun CR group. It's not like ISU where there are 36,000 people close to your age but I promise there are lots of awesome people your age. Get involved with groups and be open to meeting people. My biggest issue at first was not being open to meeting new people.

When I first moved to the area awhile ago, other than work, I met a lot of people through Volleys. It's too late to sign up for a season, however they usually have weekend tournaments. The next time they have a Mad Hatter tournament, you don't need a team to sign up--it's everyone for themselves and rotated around.

Otherwise I'd find a gym and get into a racquetball league. When I used to do leagues, the other players were always looking for people to play against outside of league matches.

Generally, if you have any sport interest, the local group or joining a league (city/company/gym/etc) will get you to meet a lot of people.

There also used to be a meetup for ISU alumni to get together. I've never done it and haven't heard anything about it lately, so hopefully someone here might know if there are any alumni or game watch meetups.

You summed up my issue perfectly. In college it was easy to meetup with new people and explore new hobbies. I will look into this ImpactCR. Thanks.
