Sorry, I meant in absolute terms, not relative. Presumably Parrish has some idea of returning rosters as of now.

No doubt the returning core is fantastic, but losing Jones and Gilbert is massive.
I know some (many?) don't see Jackson and Chatfield as big losses, but I think both were functional and, at times, very good. I have to see what the new posts can do before seeing the group as an upgrade.

If by "a step back" you mean from top 5 to top 15, I can live with that.

Everybody loses key players - always has been the case with graduation and entering the draft early, it’s just now NIL and the portal have completely shifted things, and it’s how well you navigate the portal that can determine your entire season. ISU did well in the portal this year… so well I think we might actually be in a better position for 25/26 than we were in 24/25. I certainly don’t think we’ll be nearly as soft in the lane defensively and rebounding this coming year.

I think both were kind of a liability on defense, at least in TJ’s system where he wants to trap and steal on the perimeter.

Jackson kind of disappeared offensively in conference play too. Averaged 10 ppg in the non-conference and dropped 7 ppg in conference+post season. For how tall and big he was he wasn’t very efficient around the hoop.

Maybe with a little less returning there will be a little more desperation to get the freshman more involved and go with a trial by fire approach (not knowing what approach has been taken).

It keeps getting said that freshman haven't done well under TJ. The ratio shows that out for hadn't worked out vd. who has but the circumstances led to Tamin, Milan and Hunter being huge pieces third first years.

We need another good guard, I don’t care where it comes from. In the mold of Keshon. Someone phenomenal in the open floor with speed quickness and an insane finish rate at the rim. Doesn’t seem to be too much to ask for.

“There is absolutely no reason to believe that a freshman won’t step up”.

C’mon, that’s kinda a ridiculous statement. No reason?

I think we can be good, but don’t put that expectation or “hope” on guys who have yet to put a jersey on and have yet to play a minute of college basketball.

There will be 50% less seniors than this year so it’s kind of inevitable that more freshman step up nation wide. Only question is if ISU has any of them that mathematically are guaranteed to contribute more.

I don't think most people realize how good Batemon is. I would not be shocked if he started next season in the slightest. He's the #9 combo guard in the country and all 8 above him will likely be starters next season at their power conference schools.

This is a good point - we've felt burned by Freshman not being what we expected - specifically Nojus and Omaha - and to a lesser extent Hamilton

And clearly Omaha was a raw product that didn't meet his recruiting rankings.

But Batemon is higher than all the other misses - he's a similar ranking to Milan and Hunter.

Mitchell is a similar ranking to Nojus, and Toure is lower in the Rock/Fish/Hamilton range. (note that Tamin was far far lower than any of those)

Toure is ranked low cause he came from Europe and only played 1 year of high school and no summer ball. He might be the gem of this class.

He will also be a 19 year old freshman with experience playing in Europe. In one of TJ’s interviews he mentioned they talked about adding Toure to last years class when Pierce left early. I think he can make an immediate impact next year depending on his knee injury.

I know but Toure has a season ending knee injury. Like I said I don’t care where they come from, portal or freshman. It’s a need.

From what I understand, it was "season ending" only because it was with just a few games left in the season. The connotation of that phrase compared with reality is probably not accurate.

I don't think it's expected he will miss the start of the season at Iowa State. I think if that was the case we might have heard a lot more about it.

Right - he would be more of a "gem in the rough" recruiting success, like Tamin. And we haven't "hit" on one of those since Tamin.

but Batemon shouldn't be viewed in the same light - he's a Milan-level recruit who should be expected to play on day one

Whoa. Does this imply he believes the overall level of play at the top is going to drop a bit from this season?
I believe most feel that the level of play is going to drop now that the vast majority of older players have run out of eligibility. I heard Blum and Williams as well as other "Talking Heads" say that everyone's roster is going to get a lot young.

If you factor in the age of some of these players the past couple of seasons- it is no wonder many of the incoming freshmen are riding pine. It takes a special freshmen or a special need for freshmen to see meaningful minutes. We see 17/18 year old athletes trying to beat out players who are 22-24 years old in most cases.

He had the softest grip of any big man. He struggled mightily with the ball when he could not physically over power his defender. He has/had trouble with the double teams on offense. I am not down on Jackson, he would have been a nice piece to have- but only at his original or slightly discounted price. I do not begrudge him doing what is best for him.
