I don't know why this is a surprise to anyone at all.

As soon as it was official that Campbell was coming to ISU, Candle was a possible candidate, and a logical one, to replace him as head coach at Toledo.

But Toledo hadn't reached out to him yet, so he came to ISU, but he was NEVER officially on our staff and was never announced as being on our staff. If you go back and look at the OFFICIAL announcements from ISU, Candle is never announced as taking a position here. The reason for that is because he was still holding out hope to get the offer to be the head coach at Toledo.

Had Toledo went a different direction, then I'm sure Candle would have then been announced as our new OC. He was just being smart and covering his bases. He didn't want to end up with neither job.

And it sounds like Campbell basically told him to take the Toledo head coaching job after it was offered to him. He said he would have been dumb to refuse it. Nothing all that odd happened here folks. Get over it.

I don't think most posters are surprised at all, nor over-reacting. But seems logical to be curious as to how the recruiting of Toledo recruits to ISU will be handled, that's all.

Matt Campbell will reach out to Toledo recruits that he wants to be a part of his Iowa State team. Pretty simple. Many times athletes have a desire to play for a certain head coach.....or have a bond with an assistant coach. It is recruiting. Get the best players you can get that you want.

Sage did it at the end of the Insight Bowl game. Sage took the snap and delayed kneeling for about 3 seconds and then took the knee. Did that for 3 plays. On the 4th Down QB just goes back and heaves the ball as far as he can in the air deep and out of bounds. That would take several seconds at least as the clock would not stop until the ball hit the ground. Game over.

Notre Dame did this against Temple earlier this year (IIRC) a week or two after the Michigan v. Michigan St. punt debacle... and the Temple DE caused a fumble but the ball bounced off the ground right back up into the QB's hands and he was able to throw it high/far out of bounds anyways. Could have been a disaster- Luck of the Irish I guess.

You really don't understand this game, do you?

You wanted Lanning to just run around in the backfield and then throw it away when he is close to getting sacked? Nevermind the fact that the ball being thrown incomplete stops the clock? Nevermind that running out of bounds stops the clock? I honestly do not understand your logic here.

I'll try to explain this one more time and then I'm giving up. There was 91 seconds left in the game. We snap it on first down, Lanning sidesteps for a few seconds, tosses the ball to the ref, and by the time KSU calls time out there's maybe 87 seconds left. We snap the ball on 2nd down, run off a few seconds and Lanning takes a knee and tosses it to the ref with about 83 seconds left. We run off 40 seconds and snap the ball on 3rd down with about 43 seconds left. Lanning runs around and takes off another 3 seconds so there's about 40 seconds left. We run off another 40 seconds and game over, or if there's still a few seconds left we snap it, run around few a few seconds until the gun sounds and take a knee, game over. Or just throw it in the air with a second left. Either way, game over, Cyclones win. How is that so hard to understand?

I'll be honest you lost me at the take a knee part. What does that mean exactly?

Toledo: Jason Candle will make $650,000 per year (+ $25,000 into a retirement fund) as head coach of the Rockets, according to Steve Berkowitz. That’s $200,000 more than Toledo was paying Matt Campbell, and makes Candle the second highest paid coach in the league behind only Western Michigan’s PJ Fleck. Berkowitz adds that Candle’s buyout over the first three years is $600,000.
