That sucks for the sport, and I doubt Campbell is the last to reduce the amount of scholarships available for these young men looking to compete in D1 wrestling

with only 3 scholarships and a Probable roster cap of 30 for next year - 10% on scholarship

unfortunately, I think this is just the beginning on a decrease in scholarships despite the ncaa Raising the number of scholarships available

There are only 15 men's gymnastics teams nationally, and 3 of them are D-3. That's one sport that I wouldn't be surprised to see dry up.
Is this a good time to point out that for a short time Iowa State was a national power in Men's gymnastics? Ed Gagnier started the program from scratch and won 3 national titles and 3 more runner up finishes from 1970 to 1980.

Sad to see what is happening in college Olympic sports.

I have no idea of this is what is going on at Campbell, but I have been wondering if some programs would try something similar to attempt to get the program funded privately (through NIL deals).

This will be pretty common in men's Olympic sports as schools reallocate scholarships to football and basketball. By cutting men's scholarships in olympic sports, they don't have to match those new scholarships with a women's sport to keep up with title 9.

That was the issue 30+ years ago when Title IX was introduced. I don't think that's what's going on here. Football and Basketball are not adding more scholarships. Actually, with more funding coming through NIL there are other avenues to make the athletes 'whole' without compromising Title IX.

Not the case in this instance, but my point is we will likely see quite a bit more of this. Teams will feel the need to add as much of the 20+ newly available scholarships for football and men’s basketball as they can, but many of those will reduce Olympic men’s sports rather than matching with additional women’s scholarships.

This is exactly what is going on. The schools are telling the fans that they will be responsible to financially support the team. You can’t do partial scholarships so this means 3 wrestlers will get full scholarships and the rest will walk-on with or without NIL $. At the end of the day may not be much change as if you can raise $150K to $200K (depending on university tuition cost) you can fully support another 5 - 10 wrestlers.

Say Campbell had previous scholarship $ of 9.9. If the school has a NIL program then the wrestling supporters will fill the NIL fund. If the find reaches $150K or so then you are right back to basically 10 scholarships. So there is minimum impact to the wrestlers.

Also, several teams give out solid academic or other non-athletic scholarships. Some schools may even increase the ability of athletes to get these scholarships.

I can't figure out what Campbell is gaining from this. They're FCS, so this isn't a "pull everything and put it into 20 extra football scholarships" situation. It's also six scholarships, so it can't be breaking the bank.

They'd probably be better off going the other way -- dropping football and putting part of that savings toward other men's sports.

Football added 30 or 20
