True, but that's not why they suck.

They suck because they haven't made a good coaching hire in either sport for about 30 years.
Football since Holtz was there in 84-85:
John Gutekunst, Jim Wacker, Glen Mason, Tim Brewster, Jeff Horton, Jerry Kill, Tracy Claeys, P. J. Fleck
not exactly a hall of fame list - Mason was barely over .500 in 10 years.

BBall - Clem Haskins was there for 13 years, and managed 111-100 record. Tubby was there 6 years and was pretty good actually 124-81. Although I think BOTH got caught doing bad things iirc.
The others Monson, Molinari, Little Ricky, and Ben Johnson now - woof.

Put say, Klieman and TJ at Minny, with more money and more population, and they could be Top 10 programs, similar to Wisky when they had Bennett and Alvarez.
Holtz got them in trouble with the NCAA. They won with him but paid a price.

If anybody was curious what went wrong in the Mizzou game...

Grill has a bad foul and an even worse turnover that helps seal their fate.

Yeah that completely unnecessary pass with less than 30 seconds left was head scratching.

Missouri also missed a TON of free throws down the stretch.

Watching it again this morning...

I don't blame Grill for the foul. It was an iffy call -- gentle touch under the basket. The ref should have swallowed the whistle on that one. Still, Grill is a fifth-year senior. He has to know he has to avoid putting himself in a situation like that where Jackson State can have a cheap and-one to cut the lead.

Jackson State missed the free throw, though.

That pass is just terrible. It is worse every time I watch it. The shot clock and the game clock have equal time left. Jackson State needs a turnover or to foul. You've got the ball over the midcourt line. If they get a good trap on you, you've got timeouts. You're the fifth-year senior. You want the ball in your hands in this situation. Make them come and foul you, drill your free throws (and Grill made two a little earlier in the game), and put them away. You're in good shape considering Jackson State is giving you a heck of a game.

Nope. Terrible crosscourt pass that gets picked off. No need for it.

You can dissect every Grill play for the rest of the season but Missouri just flat out isn't very good. A roster full of role players with no real identity. They're in for a long season in CoMo while they wait for that recruiting class to arrive next summer.
I am surprised. Seems like they had decent traction in the NIL market a year ago, has that dried up? They were really good a year ago, I was thinking Gates could be good enough to keep the momentum going.

The Colorado State kid they paid a lot for, John Tonje, has been injured. Sort of similar to KState with Nowell and Keyontae Johnson, there is no replacing Kobe Brown and D'Moi Hodges. Both were old, near All-American level players, who are now on NBA rosters. They don't have anything remotely close to that on this roster.

#61 on Torvik right now with preseason projections

#134 on Torvik without preseason projections (that Jackson State loss stings)

24th team on the wrong side of the bubble

Iowa State is currently a #7 seed in comparison.

They've dug themselves quite the hole with that Jackson State loss.

Almost made it worse by losing to Minnesota (maybe the worst P6 team).

I wish we played them this year. Last year's game just sucked.

Wasn't a lot but any game against a non B12 tourney team was bad for ISU although the Mizzou game seemed to be a 'get in and nobody else get hurt' kind of deal but it was still a weird trend.

They played pretty well against UConn but UConn was a different level.

Yeah that was an annoying reality of last season. We more or less got our doors blown off by NCAA Tourney caliber teams that weren't Big 12 teams.

It feels kind of gross that this thread continues to point out (and sometimes celebrate) Caleb's ongoing struggles under the guise of mental health advocacy. If you truly believe he has a problem, the answer probably isn't to go out of your way to talk **** about him on the internet and break down his mistakes ad nauseum. He was kicked off the team and has moved on. This forum, ISU, and some of you would probably be better served doing the same.

I think everybody is glad the SEC/Big 12 challenge is over. No more random road trips in the heart of conference play.

I've said this before, but I wish there was a Big 12/Big Ten challenge to replace it.

Something like that in late December just before the Big 12 slate starts would be great.

If you paired by the preseason Torvik rankings from last year you'd get this...

Houston | Purdue
Texas | Michigan State
Kansas | Maryland
Baylor | Northwestern
West Virginia | Indiana
Kansas State | Penn State
TCU | Rutgers
Iowa State | Iowa (and yes they'd switch out of this somehow but just going with it)
Oklahoma State | Michigan
Cincinnati | Ohio State
Oklahoma | Illinois
Texas Tech | Wisconsin
UCF | Nebraska
BYU | Minnesota

I'm sure you'd tweak the matchups somewhat, but doesn't that look like fun?

I think we've mostly moved on from Grill to Mizzou generally now.

And Grill *did* throw a stupid pass in a game that ended up as a terrible loss for the Tigers.

I haven't said anything about the guy off the court.

But his play as a basketball player is completely fair game on a college sports board.

Like it or not, a guy that was a Cyclone (twice) that ended up leaving the way he left is going to draw the interest of quite a few fans. By the way, it's the internet - a place where everyone goes out of their way to comment on everything. Aside from a few dumb comments from a select few posters, this thread has been full of respectful comments of Caleb. Breaking down a game where a former Cyclone playing for another P6 team loses at home to Jackson State is not off limits.
