Bubu

This is extremely shortsighted, as are those who are saying that Bubu will only get garbage minutes EVER in his college career at ISU. He is a year young for his class, so technically he should still be playing with Harrison's grade but he skipped a grade as a younger kid. Both Downs and Mcdermott (whose opinion I value more than ANY poster on this board) have said that had he not skipped a grade and played with his class he likely would've been a mid D-1 offer or higher.

Plus, I don't think there is a single person on the current staff who would agree with the statement "Bubu will not make a significant contribution to ISU basketball through playing substantial minutes over the next 5 years (they plan on redshirting him)", so I find it very puzzling to see how some of you seem so sure of it. The idea that in modern recruiting talent is impossible to go under the radar is silly, how does Stephon Curry end up in the Missouri Valley?

How does this work with NCAA rules? Are you it not eligible if you step on the court like tonight? I've found things that say that is true but I've heard it is based on minutes too...

this thread really kind of pisses me off..

bubu played really well.. just like everyone else.. but it doesnt matter.. because hes a walk on.. give me a break.. honestly i thought he played better then boozer and honestly if cam lee would of came back i gurantee alot of people would of been all over it.. but wait.. he was a walk on

ok vent over

What it means is either your scholarship players have gotten hurt or have flamed out. As much as people may have loved Petey, the fact that he was starting was due largely to the fact that scholarship guys in front of him didn't get it done. If your recruiting is doing well, especially in terms of evaluation, your walk-ons should only ever get garbage minutes.

Walk ons don't play meaningful minutes for Major college basketball teams that are successful. FACT. Not an opinion

Do some research before you call me out for doing nothing more than stating a fact. I am in no way ripping Bubu or walk ons. Like I have said 3 times I love walk ons and their importance on a team. We had walk ons playing the last couple years so people here thing it is the norm....IT IS NOT

The preseason #1 team in 2004-2005 had a walk-on start all but 2 games and play 23 minutes per game.

Obviously, however, this is a very rare exception.

Doesn't ku have a former walk-on playing some pretty major minutes??

That being said, walk-ons are not brought in to be major contributors, especially early on. If they can ever see the floor in significant minutes, it's a bonus. There's a reason so much money is spent on recruiting and signing athletes. They are the ones that are supposed to win games. The walk-ons are supposed to make the starters better. If they are ever able to contribute meaningful minutes, so be it...

Will Conroy, Washington Huskies all-time assist leader, led UW to a couple NCAA tournaments and the Sweet 16, oh yeah he was a walk-on.

Trajan Langdon former Duke star and oh yeah he was a walk-on.

Anthony Epps scored almost 900 points for Kentucky and oh yeah he was a walk-on.

i thought bubu played really well tonight, he looked prty nurvous, maybe not as tall as i would like. A red shirt would do him well, just like oliver, You dont think they do any recruiting for walk ons? a lot of walk ons were ppl they were looking at but didnt meet/exceed expectations. Some ppl say your program is only as good as your last person on your bench, if bubu is the last person on our bench i feel prty **** good about this years team. He is a deffinate crowd pleaser. As soon as he went to check in everybody was cheering for him, as he scored was proly one of the loudest hilton was tonight, and he also got after it on d. Were iowa state if you dont know, were known for our dimonds in the roughs! i think bubu will surprise a lot of ppl in 2 more years. best of luck to him in the near future.

Also since you are calling me out, please tell me the last walk on to make it in the NBA.

I will wait

Jeff Hornacek? Bubu doesn't need to make it to the NBA to become a really valuable member of our team. The odds may be against him for serious minutes, and expectations certainly shouldn't be built up too high at this point, but I don't think we should disregard him and not talk about him either.

Bubu will be a factor before he's done, but he will redshirt this year. He's very quick and he's got a great handle. His BBall IQ is extremely high. He was the point guard on the state championship team. He was the MVP of the Capital City League. Most importantly, he's very motivated because he has something to prove.

Unfortunately for him, there are three quality point guards on scholarship right now, so it's likely that it will be a few years before he becomes a major factor. But he will be a factor.

Hey, I just like the new energy that this team beings. Bubu is energy so he fits in.

Say anything even remotely not complimentary about a player and the wolves come out to play. Amusing.

Nice to see him play and score at the end. Heard he's a good kid. Likely won't be much of a factor for Iowa State.

Bubu is definitely athletic enough to simply dismiss at this point in his career.

I love the ability of certain Cyclone fans to be able to conclude how an athlete will develop over the course of four/five years after their first game. I wish I had that kind of vision. I could make a lot of money if I could see the future that clearly.

I think everyone recognizes that the odds of a walk-on being a major contributor is far less than a scholarship player, but why are some so offended when fans are pulling for the underdog? The attitude of some on here comes off as elitist snobbery.

I have the utmost respect for walk-ons. They are out there busting their tails in practice to see, at best, limited playing time, and not recieiving any scholarship money. If you saw the way Bubu pressured the ball last night, there is no doubt he is working DG, DB, and CC hard in practice, which can only help in making them better players. Keep up the good work, Bubu!

Get over yourselves. While he might not make an impact on the stat sheet this year having another good player to practice with is not a bad thing.

Also, you don't recruit walk-ons to play quality minutes their freshman year. If Bubu keeps working and getting better I can see him being a very good player as an upperclassman.

Exactly it can happen but is very rare. That is why I said 95% of the time it does not happen

Don't know what you are talking about. Trajan Langdon was a McDonald's All American.

Anthony Epps was not a walk on either

Jeff Hornaceck is the last one I can think of and that was over 20 years ago.

Bubu is already a valuable member of our team. He busts his butt in practice every day and makes our guards better. I am all for talking about him and I agree with your post. We just shouldn't expect the guy to become a starter like some here have suggested

Who said it doesn't matter? Read first. Then maybe you wouldn't get so mad

Yep. And I am saying complimentary things about Bubu. But I am also saying that us fans need to be realistic about what he is to our team. He is a very good walk on that makes our players better in practice. How GREAT of a compliment is that?! I would love it if somebody said that about me. But by me saying that he will probably never get meaningful minutes in big games (unless we got back to how we were the last 2 years) I am the devil who hates all things Bubu I guess :mask:

He will most likely redshirt this year. Who knows how good he will be in his 5th year here. Hornacek was a walk on, turned out fine, clearly the exception but Bubu can move and has a good body for a young kid. People think these 17 year old kids come in and that is as good as they get. He has 5 years to get better. and there is a ton of maturing to do from 17-22 years of age. Just have to wait and see what happens.

Not to be a jerk but you don't recruit walk ons to see quality minutes ever. You recruit them for practice.

FWIW McD said last night on the post game show that he plans to redshirt both Bubu and Dorr so they can add more to their body. I doubt you waste your time redshirting kids if you don't think they have the potential to help your team in the future. He had nothing but really good things to say about Bubu and any time I've heard McD talk about him he sounds like Bubu is better than he thought he would be and feels lucky to steal him away as a walk on
