the rock back and forth in a circular motion song. "what ya gonna do, ISU" is horrible. I don't even understand what it mean.

I understand the Hamms beer song puts me in the right mood. Half drunk, From the land of sky blue waters.

As long as they don't take away the "don't the words" song I think I'll be ok. The song you are speaking of is dumb but when you are drunk at the start of a football game from tailgating the past 6+ hours anything is fun to you.

Yes I know the "...don't know the words to this stupid *%!&ing song!" is not the right words or even the PG words but it has become somewhat of a tradition anymore to sing it that way. If little kids are in the area I just "bleep" the f-word when I sing it. LOL :biggrin9gp:

I guess I'm going senile in my 35 years ....

But I don't recall anything bleepworthy in the "Don't know the Words", or the Hamm's song for that matter.

This was still around when I was there in 2001. The issue then was, the song took so long to play (bass drum intro, then tubas, then the melody) and the band only has a few time periods that are long enough. They are told when they can play, when there is a planned scoreboard deal, or some music like Neal Diamond playing over the sound system. "Whatcha Gonna Do" takes much less time, and can happen during change of possession, or even between downs (Other than First and Third).

I was in the band when the word came down that we were not to play the Hamm's theme. As it was explained to us, the Native American population had sent some nasty letters to the music department and athletic department about the possible negative sterotype the chant promoted. We enjoyed playing the Hamm's song, but the university wanted us to keep it all PC.
Thus our director at the time altered it to something that sounded more like "Sunshine of your Love" by Cream. SOUNDS LIKE.
As for What'cha gonna do.........it was introduced by a later, lame director and it was never dropped. I agree it is lame.

That's funny how true that statement is.

Except no matter how drunk I am, I still can't get into the CY--CL--ON---ES Jeff Johnson led chant.

From bottlegang.blogspot.com

"...the jingle went as follows: "From the land of sky-blue waters, from the land of pines, lofty balsams, comes the beer refreshing, Hamm's the beer refreshing." Once heard, the theme could not be forgotten. Interestingly, although the drum beat behind the melody sounds native American, its source of origin is further south than that: Advertiser Ray Mithun based it on recordings of Haitian Voodoo drumming, and the rhythm was actually beaten out on an empty carton of Star-Kist tuna cans."

Looks like the PC police might have missed the mark on this one...:eek:o7dt:

I wonder if the headhunters on the Malaita islands in Pacific were upset when we sang the theme song to Gilligan's Island? :wink0st:

That chant needs to go. Seriously, what do you think people that have never been to JTS think when they see some of those dumb chants Jeff does. No offense to Jeff, I love his enthusiam but you have to wonder if he leads chants at the dinner table at home too. :laugh8kb:

well the "clean/traditional" version is: "don't know the words and I don't care!"

What a lot of people have changed it to: "don't know the words to this stupid f'ing song!"

And I've heard some people say that the real words are something like: "fight I-S-U!.... fight I-S-U!"

With respect to "Don't Know The Words" there are actually no words.

Ya know, it's not like it can't be taught to the current students and have them belt it out any time they feel like it from the student section...
