The Caberet in Urbandale used to use their own mix that was great, but last time I was there they were using something pre-mixed.
Right now, I think Rookies has the best Bloody Marys and I think it is a homemade recipe.
My personal homemade recipe seems to go down pretty well and it contains:
Clamato
Olive Juice
Pickle Juice
Lime Juice
Worstechire
Hot Sauce
Horseradish
Garlic
Onion Powder
Black Pepper
Celery Salt
Celery Seed

Kind of a pain to make, but mmmmmmm.....

I use some Heinz57 or A1 steak sauce in my recipe. Olive juice and pickle juice are ingredients as well.

For a hearty twist, try some beef base (use the paste not the cubes or liquids) for a full steak flavor.

Does this taste better than the stuff in a can that they give me on the airplane when they run out of tomato juice?

In my opinion, yes. In fact I would suggest next time your on a plane, you ask if they could add some:
Olive Juice
Pickle Juice
Lime Juice
Worstechire
Hot Sauce
Horseradish
Garlic
Onion Powder
Black Pepper
Celery Salt
Celery Seed

...or you could pack it on your carry on, as long as you do not exceed 3 oz. of the liquids.

The wife loves Welch Avenue Station's bloody marys. I gotta say that akclone's are damn good.

Cornfields
thumbs has the best you can buy, but you're usually better off making your own. 1/2 vodka, 1/2 tomato juice, 4 dabs of worcester, 6 shakes of franks red hot, garnish with a pickle, and rim the glass with salt & pepper.

The former manager of Cy's (he reopened it back in 2003) supposedly made the best in Ames until he "left"... people would come around on a Saturday morning before football or whenever just to have one... I don't like bloody mary's but enjoyed his, so take that for what it's worth. unfortunately, i don't remember exactly how he made his.
