Heard that there were some big name schools in Ames over the weekend to look at Barnes. Apparently, there was a well-attended tournament sponsored by All Iowa Attack.

Was anybody at Courts on Duff to witness the event?

Anybody give us a report from their own perspective?

The 'U16 Attack team' was combined with the 'U17 Attack' team to form 2 'U17 Attack teams' now; a black and a red squad. All the U16 members (4 this tournament) played on one squad with 4 or 5 U17 members while the other squad was all U17 players.

The all U17 squad won the U17 tournament, beating the U17 Iowa Barnstormers in the championship. The U16/17 squad, with Harrison and the other U16 players, lost by close to 30 in the semifinals to the U17 Iowa Barnstormers.

In the U16 division, the 'Ames Cyclones' beat Howard Pulley by around 17 or 18 points to win the championship. The 'Cyclones' had the likes of McDermott's son Doug, Chanse Creekmur of Marshalltown, 5 players from Ames, and a couple from the Des Moines area. This seemed to be a newer team assembled with random players from Martin Brothers, Barnstormers, and a couple ex-Attack players. They were also coached by Curtis Stinson, Lucca Staiger, Diante Garret, Charles Boozer, Rashon Clark, and were directed by an Ames man.

Overall, the Attack U17 looked phenomenal, while the U17/U16 looked to have some issues. On the U17 side, Reece Uhlenhopp of Urbandale looked great down low and also shooting from the outside. Bill Freeman of Des Moines Roosevelt also showed his extreme athleticism throughout the tournament with some impressive dunks. Barnes looked great most of the tournament for the U16/17 team, putting up great numbers, but in the semifinals against the U17 Barnstormer's seemed off; perhaps a reason why they lost by around 30.

The U16Cyclones were very impressive and put up big numbers as a team the entire tournament. Scoring seemed exceptionally balanced between McDermott, Creekmur, and James Wandling of Ames. Creekmur from Marshalltown stirred up alot of talk putting up 25+ points in 4 of the 6 games.

Who was the "Ames man" that put together the Ames Cyclones?

Do you think the Ames Cyclones were formed simply to get some exposure for kids that might not have otherwise been in this particular tournement?

Did you see any coaches/programs interested in Barnes that would be noteworthy?

Big name schools couldn't have been in Ames to watch Harrison or anyone else this weekend as I'm 99% this isn't an "open eval" period. I believe the next one is July 6-15 & 22-31.

You can still watch them play, you just can't contact them at all. It's a "no-contact" period. If there weren't coaches there watching them there would be a lot less demand for AAU tournies.

Martin Brothers lists Doug McDermott at 6'5". He's on their 16U team.

He plays on the team with my fiances cousin who is a guard from Norwalk.

There is talent and potential there with him. And it doesn't hurt that his dad is there to help him out either at home.

That Martin Brothers team is good and really balanced. Not sure if there is one super star though.

Correct, this weekend was not an 'open' period.

According to some sources, the 'Cyclones' team has actually been active the previous two years. As stated, they are composed of players from Martin Bros., and a couple ex-Barnstormer's and Attack players, then 4 or 5 from around the central Iowa area. I also heard they finished 3rd in a Minnesota tournament last weekend...

Wrong. The tournaments held in May / June are for the teams to prepare for July. Juco, D3, & D2 can be out in June watching, but Division I schools are strictly reduce to July 6-15 & July 22-31 except for a couple specific weekends in April & September.

If any Division I coaches were in Ames watching this past weekend, they were in violation. The only exception is parenting...that is why its such a huge advantage for Mac to have kids playing ball now days, he can go watch his son play anytime...even if Harrision just happens to be playing in the same tournament!

My fault, I guess I was wrong then.

Please report Indiana to the NCAA because they just offered Barnes a scholarship.

Doug Mcdermott is a 6'5" shooting guard. I wouldn't be suprised to see him walk on at ISU. However his teammate, Chanse Creekmur, is a high major d1 prospect. Besides ISU, he's being recruited by the likes of UCLA and Iowa. Any more question?

Anyone have extra information on the Ames Cyclones thats not already posted? Such as the players from Ames... The director of the team.

I found it very interesting the 4 or 5 coaches who coached the team over the weekend: Stinson, Lucca, Diante, Rashon, and Boozer. I have also heard that two years back prior to McDermott, the coaches were Stinson, Blalock, Tasheed Carr, Rashon, and Damion Staple.

You might want to start an Ames Cyclones thread, we seem to go crazy about Harrison around here, so you might not get the info you are looking for in this thread.

I get the sense that some of you think that if a kid is playing AAU basketball that he is automatically a prospect. Nothing could be further from the truth. I coached an AAU team and it is really akin to a Little League or a Cal Ripken League for basketball.

I was in Las Vegas on business a few years ago in July (if I recall correctly) and they had a big national tournament going on there at the time. This is when the coaches really congregate to see the cream of the crop from all over the nation. It was pretty cool seeing all of these coaches walking around the casino...Roy Williams, Coach K, Rick Barnes...heck I even saw Jay Bilas out there.

I think they also have a bigger national type tournament in Orlando as well at the Disney complex. My son plays with some kids that went to Orlando last year.

Martin Brothers will be going there in July.

I heard Floud (USC Coach) said he was looking 4 a reason to come back to Ames, and said he's found his reason in Barnes.

Is there any truth to this?

Kids can be offered scholarships at any time. The key word in all of this is "evaluation." Going to tournaments to watch games. The rules are very complicated.

Here is how it works to offer a kid if they're not a junior yet (phone calls start in Sept of your junior year)...
Indiana, etc calls AAU or HS coach. Says, have Harrison call Tom Crean's cell phone. I'll be available from 5-7pm. Calls initiated by the recruit are always legal, except during "dead" periods but that's another story.
Harrison calls the # given to him by the AAU or HS Coach. They talk, Crean offers. There is your offer.

Some coaches will even offer through the AAU coach. "Tell Harrison Indiana is offering. We'll talk details later." Happens all the time.

Hope this helps.
