Just curious...why does every game have to be a major production? Why not have a few key games typically produced, and then use a CloneZone approach for the rest. A couple of camera angles for the video, and for the audio use one of the team radio broadcasts. With digital transport streams, I think you can have multiple audio channels, so put each team's readio broadcast on one audio channel.

That may work in some instances such as non-revenue sports. The issue with football and mens basketball is that you have fanbases that are used to seeing their teams in fully produced games. I don't think it would go over well. Look at the Iowa fanbase, they weren't happy with the BTN because their games that used to be over broadcast channels were suddenly on cable. Add to that the quality of the broadcast would be reduced and the network would get some serious negative backlash.

I think the best solution would be to keep the individual schools networks (CTN), for basketball at least, and just give them a medium to show it regionally or over the web. That way, ABC5 still would have the opportunity to show the games locally and it would be on the B12 network for those out of the area. If you fully utilize the web streaming ability, it should cut down on the need for multiple channels, which would be a big help in negotiating with cable and satelitte companies.

I just don't see this working due to the production costs. Not only do you have to supply the equipment, but with this large of a geographical area travelling those trucks around would be expensive and will take some time in between games.

Having more schools involved would cut down on costs per school. It is not like you would have to move trucks all over the country, you could keep them in areas and such. ESPN, CBS, FOX all of these go all over for FB games. For BB most school have their own network and all ready have the equipment so that would not be an issue. The Big 213443q5 did it and is making it work somehow, there is no reason the Big 12 and Pac 10 cannot make it work.

It may cut down on the cost per school, but the schools aren't paying for that equipment. You have to look at the initial costs to the network because in the end that's who will pay for it.

Also, how would a combined network help out ISU at all? FSN already shows basically Pac10 and Big12 and we already can't get on that. I don't see why we need to combine to make this work.

I think they have. Remember last year they came out with a Big12 network and started producing some of their own games. I doubt they can publicly advertise the creation of a stand alone channel while they are still under contract. The nice thing is that if they drop the FSN/Versus while they get this thing going they still have their larger ESPN contract to fall back on while they get the market share they need.

Yes but that is for the Big 12, they will almost have to start from scratch if they what to combine the Big 12 and Pac 10

Maybe I'm crazy but, what about the advertisers? For a company to justify putting their product on a channel then they will need to be assured that a majority of people would be able to buy their product. There are obviously quite a few national companies that will advertise, but by make this area so large are you going to turn some companies off? Will companies in California want to pay to have their commercial on in Iowa? We already see this in the Big12 broadcasts with Whataburger. Has anyone ever seen a Whataburger in Iowa?

Whataburger is only in two Big 12 states, and that hasn't stopped them from being a significant sponsor of Big 12 sports. Also, there have been many posts on here about Cyclones fans traveling into Whataburger country and stopping at one for a burger.

Revenue sharing is probably the big sticking point.

That can be worked out with a 50/50 arrangement: 50% for the Pac 10, 50% for Texas. Sadly, that's pretty close to what the Big XII would agree to.

The Big 12 wants all of their games to be televised. Why would they not? And they don't have any say, really, in what does get telecast and when. Fox owns the rights to the broadcasts, though, and can do with them as they please. QUOTE]

No, the Big 12 is this dumb. They only want one game on at a time so all the Big 12 eyes are on that one game. This is seriously their thought process. If the Big 12 REALLY wanted all their games telelvised, the conference portion of the television package would televise all games. Notice each week there is at least one conference game not televised. Notice that OU and Texas are on TV EVERY week, no matter their opponent. You need to remember the rest of the Big 12 is here to support Texas, OU, Neb and A & M in football. You can tell the conference does not care about the rest of their institutions with this terrible TV contract and revenue sharing plan.

Whataburger

Though they are only in 2 states, they have 6 of the Big 12 schools. Not that that makes Whataburger any less awesome.
