My parents just moved here and asked which emergency room was best. I really didn't have an answer. Your loved one is critically injured. Do you want the paramedics taking them to Mercy or Methodist ER? I really don't have any experience with either.

If it is a critical injury? Mercy. For Urgent care? Whatever urgent care clinic is closest.

Had to go to Mercy West on a Monday evening a month or so ago to have an appendectomy. Basically got right in. The facilities are top notch and the people were excellent. Even though I live in Ankeny, I will continue to go there.

Agreed.

Emergency room - I had a very scary stretch with our daughter who was 2 at the time. Mercy urgent care sent us to the ER at Mercy downtown and I can't say enough good things about how we were treated and the care they gave our daughter.

Urgent Care - Find one close that they like. We generally use Mercy North in Ankeny for urgent care as we have found it to be better than going to Ames and it's about the same distance.

My mom has had two knee replacements at Mercy West Lakes and I had to go there after I basically had a toe cut off at the Tropics Water Park. Top notch place.

The other thing is that it doesn't appear that they're ever really "hospital busy". I've seen many hospitals in my 30 years, but Mercy West was just better than the rest. Mercy in general is a solid group in Des Moines.

Was riding down the pirate ship slide with my daughter on my lap and when we hit the bottom my foot go caught up in the nets they have on the sides. The bottom of the nets were underwater and sticking out into the slide area.

I didn't think much of it at first until I stood up and looked down at my left foot. It had cut all the way through and dislocated my pinky toe. basically it was a piece of skin left keeping it on. They got it all put back together but it doesn't really move or anything anymore.

I talked to the hotel people after I got back from the ER and was told it would be taken care of and the nets would be moved. Went back for another birthday party six months later and the nets were still there. Asked front desk if they planned on moving them again as the one night we were there about 5 people got caught in the nets. They didn't even have a record of my accident on file. Whomever I talked to just blew it off and never reported it or anything.

Are the nets on the bottom left of the picture the ones you are talking about?

I guess I was talking critical care, like a heart attack or serious accident not an urgent care clinic. I'm not sure Mercy West will take those type of patients. Don't they move the tough cases downtown?

I'm assuming your parenst live in the Des Moines area--otherwise I'd recommend Mary Greeley in Ames to them. It's a smaller hospital, but contrary to popular belief smaller doesn't mean crappy. It has all of the state of the art technology and crazy good doctors that the bigger hospitals do, but you're not treated like a number there.
