J Benjamins is great. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but they have great food and an awesome owner.

It may be called Simons now.

It is called Simon's now. I live a couple of blocks away and I stop in frequenetly. One of my favorites in Des Moines. The food and atmosphere are great but the service is amazing.

Its no where near unanimous choice, thus why some people may have a differing opinion. I can name many restaurants I would rather go to. Same with Latin King.

Yes I understand other people liking different places, just funny that some say it's just OK haha.

I asked a very similar question on Facebook for this weekend and the overwhelming majority of people had Centro on their list. Apparently the pizza is fantastic and you can't go wrong with anything else. I've never been there, but plan to change that tomorrow.

CW also lists a few of his favorite places in the mailbag.

I think Centro has a little bit of the Hickory Park effect. Ie: The reputation is greater than the food.
Dont get me wrong, I definitely enjoy Centro. But its by no means the best food in Des Moines.

Thanks a lot guys for all the advice!!!! You've been super helpful. I'll have to talk to my wife to see what she prefers but I'm sure we'll end up at one on this list.

that's a really good way of putting it. I would agree. I've always enjoyed my Centro experiences, but there are better ones out there.

This is comical it wins best restaurant almost every year.

Hickory Park is considered the best restaurant in Big 12 country. Or so i read in a recent article. (Cant remember if it was on ESPN or where)
At any rate, that is completely laughable.
People vote by habit. Same old thing. Its the same reason Ch 8 news wins best newscast every year, yet the Ch 13 crew win all the individual awards. In the same publication! How does that work?!

Yes but I have been to the restaurants listed by others and they are really good, but comparable in food "greatness" to Centro.

This place just recently opened. I'm sure at least 1 of the in-laws would enjoy it.

Centro is more of a popular spot than a great restaurant. They DO have some great menu items, including some of the best pizza in town if you like true New York style pizza. The thing that makes them popular is an awesome atmosphere, great staff, and very diverse menu in terms of both food and price. You could get out of there for $10 a head or $80 a head, depending on what you want from the experience.

One of our favorite local restaurants in Des Moines is Chef's Kitchen at Franklin and Beaver. An great restaurant with a small but great menu.
