To build off the other thread, who was the best post player? Some thoughts are Angie Welle, Desiree Francis, Nicky Wieben, Brittany Wilkins, Katie Robinette, Anna Prins, Chelsea Poppins?

My vote is for Angie Welle and honestly, it's probably not close.

Maybe we should do "second best post player?"

Saying anyone but Welle means you probably weren't around in her day, or just don't know basketball very well.

Poppens and Wieben make a close second for me. Don't think Wieben ever reached her full potential otherwise she could've been near Welle.

Welle shot .641 for her career. To put that in perspective:

Only one player (Carmen Jaspers, 86-89, .619) is within .100 of that number for Iowa State.

Only three times has an ISU player shot better than that in a single season, and all three are Welle.

Only three players have had a single season with a better FG% than Welle's worst season (.580), and all are pre-Fennelly. In fact, Jaspers is the only player with a career FG% better than Welle's worst season.

With her height it should have been Prins, she had a solid career but she could never stay totally healthy.

I'm biased but I'd say Jayme Olson (for second best consideration) who was there on Sat. She is 4th on all time scoring list, and she was a key player in BF's ISU turn around. My mom and I would sit with parents ever home game, great people.

For second best? Pop had two good seasons. Wilkens was amazing as a senior. Prins had potential but we never saw it. Wieben was as close athletically and talent-wise to Welle. So, yes, we've had a bunch of good solid posts over the years.

Yeah, it's Welle. We have had some great post players too, but I think the Fennelly era has been defined by all of the excellent guard play. And picking the best guard is probably an exercise in futility. But interesting!! Which is why I felt compelled to ask that question.

Brittany Wilkins was a top athlete who went on to the WNBA and played professionally overseas. She now lives in Japan works in physical ed. and coaches a girls basketball team over there.

Britney took awhile to come on and had the most post-graduate success (pun intended). Welle was a game-changer for ISU from the day she sipped on campus. I love Pop and would put her second, but Welle remains the best at ISU.

Welle was a blast to watch. She could bulldoze her way anywhere in the paint she wanted to go.

She would frustrate just about every player that had to try and double team her.

My vote is for Angie Welle and honestly, it's probably not close.

Her asset was that she was in phenomenal shape---worked out every summer with her sister back home, who was some triathlete or something

So she beat her opponents down court and wore them out. Very average in the half court--shot layups from her hip (and no real jump shot) That kept her from the WNBA

Angie Welle and it's not even close. I was in the same freshman class as her and I remember the first week of classes I had no clue who she was but this tall girl sits down in front of me in class and my first thought is "damn she is tall! I hope she is on the basketball team." I'm about 6'1" myself and my HS class was just 50 so not often had I run into a female who is 6'4". Went to the first women's game of the season and wouldn't you know there she is as the starting center.

Welle's game was sort of like Niang's in some ways. She wasn't overpowering in the post but she had a really good up and under move under the basket using either hand and by her senior year would shoot the 3 on occasion if teams left her open. She also ran the floor very well for someone of her stature which made it difficult to guard her in transition too.

Desiree Francis played at the same time too. Knew a guy who was on their scout team who said anyone who thought women's basketball was not physical should try boxing her out in practice because he had the bruises to prove that they aren't soft players. I'm not sure where Des would rank, probably right around that top 5 conversation as Poppens and Olson could be either #2 or #3 then things get interesting because while we had some good players some were plagued by injuries or didn't really put it all together till late in their careers. Haley Christofferson is probably in the top 5 conversation as well.

Some good stuff here to measure who the best players were: http://www.cyclones.com/pdf9/2762805.pdf?SPSID=46667&SPID=4253&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=10700 Welle shows up at the top of a lot of the lists too

I agree with Welle first but I think that the Olson/Grimm combo was lethal.

Would have loved to see Lynn Lorenzen develop under BFs tutelage.

"Yes, you can run across half court."
"Yes, you have to play defense."
"Yes, you can take more than two dribbles."
"Yes, there are the correct number of people out here."
"No, the official won't inbound the ball after a basket."
