Probably mostly wrestlers. Iowa's best sport and I'm guessing most olympic medal output per capita.

Jeff McGinnis
Dan Gable
Barry Davis

probably a few dozen that could be argued, but I highly doubt any top 5 list of actual best Iowa hs athletes vs rest of the country/world wouldn't include some wrestlers

Ben Kueter from Iowa City HS just won the U20 world championship in Bulgaria for wrestling at 97 kg. He's a top 10 overall pound for pound recruit in wrestling. He is a Iowa football and wrestling commit- a 4 star linebacker, 2x state wrestling champ, and also a standout in baseball + T&F. It got me thinking he has to be high on the list of best Iowa HS athletes of all time. Some others that came to mind:

Tim Dwight - won a billion T&F titles + elite all state football

Jeff Clement - Broke the national all time hs homerun record, don't remember if he played other sports though

Jeff Horner - 4x elite all state basketball, standout in football, baseball, and track

Harrison Barnes - At times was the consensus #1 overall bball recruit in the country, did some high jump and long jump in T&F but otherwise didn't play any other sports

Austen Arnaud - One of the best HS quarterbacks I have seen play in person. Also played basketball, baseball, and ran track, was a standout in all 3 but not near as elite as he was in football

Who did I leave off the list?
Jeff Clement? No. There are other athletes just from Marshalltown that I'd list ahead of him but none worthy of this list

Jerry Moses probably the best running back ever to come out of the state of Iowa. He played for Iowa State in the early 70s and then got a knee injury in 1971 and had to get out of football

Curious why everybody unanimously thinks Iowa track and field athletes are more elite than wrestlers.

This is like if some Canadian province decided not to list any hockey players but focused on just on local track and field.

Running fast and jumping high/long aren't any more (or less) athletic than what the best boxers, wrestlers and UFC fighters do.

They're the two oldest human sports but ignore the one Iowa is legendary in and focus on the one that Iowa has comparatively little history with outside hosting the Drake relays.

A lot of our best football athletes are better because they're wrestlers as well.

It depends if the question is:
(a) what they did in high school, or
(b) what they did in the entirety of their athletic career, but having come from an Iowa HS

yeah, I was having trouble with this just thinking of the best wrestlers

I do think you can look at pro, college and olympic success to determine how good the overall level of competition is in Iowa vs other states.

As a former wrestler, I know I couldn't outrun/jump/throw an elite track star and would probably struggle beating them in wrestling. I know I can outrun most(maybe all) of the wrestlers mentioned.
