I'm glad we got Chiz last year-this year there are way too many BCS job openings to compete with-GA Tech, Wazu, Arkansas in addition to the high profile jobs.

I don't recall that much competition

I concur...if not last year by us or someone else (remember, we got a head start on him)...someone would've snagged him this year. A&M would've been a "likely" destination.

Hypothetically, I wonder who we woulda gone after had we been searching this year.

Really? Because I remember quite a few BCS schools were looking for a head coach - with tradition rich Alabama and Miami at the top of the list. LINK

Nah, there was definitely competition last season to fill coaching vacancies. Pollard just did a better job of getting a head start on the competition...while many BCS schools were still deciding what direction to go in, Jamie already had Gene on a plane to Ames.

perhaps it just seems like there are more this year because we aren't so focused on our own team trying to find a new guy. that really was a crazy time with all of you guys tracking planes and all the other stuff. nice to be able to sit back, relax, and watch the chaos everywhere else for a change.

Yes, there were a number of them last year. I think we forget, because we had our guy locked up rather early.

It pays to have an AD with big....

I think we really didn't compete with most of the schools last year. Miami had there inside guy they wanted and we would have never gone after, Bama wanted a bigger fish with expierence then Chizik was. Minny and MSU might have been the biggest schools for Chizik last year but Minny wasn't looking till end of December, and I don't recall on MSU. Either way it would have been tough this year.

If Chizik hadn't been hired this year, he'd be on a lot of wish lists, and would have probably been heavily pursued by SMU and Baylor. Arkansas would probably have been after him too.

Last year, I know a lot of 'Bama fans really wanted Chizik until we snatched him up, so you can't really say that they wanted a coach with a bigger name.

Woah, Houston Nutt is going from Arkansas to Ole Miss. Not only is he staying within the SEC, but he's even staying in the SEC West Division. That's crazy.

Yeah, that is definitely whacky.

If that trend carries to the Big 12, Franchione will end up at Baylor...

Frankie Solich is still available:biglaugh:

I'll bet knee-braska fans wish they had old Frankie back...since the Knee-Braska Korn-Huskers had NOT BEEN TO THE BCS Championship since Frankie Solich took them to the championship!!

Baylor took Houston's Art Briles and A&M has already hired Mike Sherman. I've heard a rumor that Northern Illinois is looking at Dan McCarney, but we all know how reliable coaching rumors are.

I'd say that if ISU was looking this year, there's no way we get Chizik. He would've had A&M, Arkansas and Baylor all after him and all but Baylor are much better situations than ISU. Despite there being lots of BCS openings last year, there weren't that many in ISU's area, unlike this year where we would've had to compete with NU, A&M, Baylor and Arkansas for coaches.

Why is that crazy? He is a fine coach and knows the area as far as recruiting goes...looks like a great hire for Ole Miss to me.

From Nutt's standpoint, he will be close to home (he is an Arkansas boy) and he will enjoy trying to prove that Arkansas made a mistake...I'll bet he ends up really sticking it to Arkansas in the future.
