You buy rounds if you've got to physically walk up to the bar. It's a convenience and time saver. Run separate checks if you're sitting at a table with a waitress. Or if you like doing rounds that much, forget about the cost and enjoy your drinks. This is a crazy thing to agonize over.

If he is getting a double and everyone else is drinking beers, buy two beers for everyone else while you get him his double. Problem solved.

If you all are buying 1 round each then aren't you all paying the same price for each round? Yes the guy getting the Makers Mark is making out with the better end of the deal with each round but say there are 5 of you if you all bought 1 round each you all will have the same bill at the end of the night if you all are ordering the same drink. If you all enjoy your little ritual and time spent at the bar then you are really just paying for the social atmosphere and comradery at that point and the type of drink is not important. The only other "fair" way of going about it is saying you all drink the same thing of whatever the person buys the round. I'm guessing the guy drinking the Makers still would still pay for a round of Makers for you all because he enjoys the company and wants you to enjoy a round of what he is having. Either that or you all stop drinking crap and up your game and drink a craft beer or higher quality liquor like your Maker's buddy is so there is not such a price gap.

Is the OP either a woman and/or an accountant?

Count me into the "over thinking" it camp... Some drink cheap, some drink expensive and if it's consistent then all is well...

I would agree with this so long as you can be assured no one is keeping track. But if people are keeping tabs on who buys what, it is bound to end in awkwardness that can be very easily avoided.

Only for those keeping track. There are always the score keepers in every group - more power to 'em. I'mm buy rounds for no other reason there I like to pick up the tab once in awhile. Some folks are sucking the fun out of tying one on in a random bar with buddies.

Have you tried calling him out about it? Are you afraid that you are going to hurt his feelings? If he becomes hostile you can always teach him a lesson.... Sounds like you’re being taken advantage of. If he doesn’t understand find another bar and/or drinking buddies.

I assumed everyone knew how good makers mark is. If he orders it he can bring it up in a conversation without appearing rude. If the cost is really bothering him. It is an art form sliding into a conversation without appearing to be arrogant and annoying. see what i did there.
Such an arrogant post

My thoughts are if you are that cheap that you frequent a bar and buy rounds with "the guys" then maybe your real problem is why you are going to the bar and not the type of drinks the bar flies you are taking rounds buying drinks with if this is your biggest problem with the situation you are willingly participating in.

Most Thursday nights, I stop off at the bar after work for awhile. Typical small town Iowa bar, BS and talk sports for an hour or so. Usually around 5 to 10 or so of us and pretty standard drinking crowd, beer and maybe a Black Velvet drinker or two. Everyone usually takes a turn buying a round. So here is my question...one guy who comes in occasionally is a double Makers Mark neat drinker. So where most are drinking a $2.50 bottle or $3-4 rail, he is drinking a $10 drink, where would you stand on buying a round in this case.

I will of it's my turn, since he always returns the favor, but I know it irks a couple of the others. Just curious. I couldn't imagine drinking that for the simple fact, I would not be functional after a couple.
So he’s drinking double whiskeys for every beer that he others are drinking? He must get hammered.

Keep buying the rounds as you are doing. When its time go ALWAYS make sure he leaves before you. The Bandit/Snowman concept. You can afford about 1000 MM doubles for the cost of owi.

Hmm what if the cop shows up about 5 min after he leaves.
