There will be a definate recruiting battle when Meyers leaves, which is always a nice problem to have.

I always felt like Arnaud would have the inside track, as he's just a bit bigger and stronger, and he'll have another year in the program. Bates will probably be redshirted, so he'll have no time with the real offense. After Arnaud's redshirt year (hopefully) he'll have a whole year practicing with the second unit in the offense. Bates will be practicing with the scout team, and I just think that Arnaud will have a bit more time to perfect his throws and ability.

How can Arnaud be further along than Meyer was at the same time? Has he even joined the team yet?!

Did you read the quote. Yes, he has joined the team, he is in his fourth practice and Mac thinks he is farther along in his fourth practice than Meyer was in his fourth practice. Even if he hadn't joined the team yet, that doesn't change the meaning of the quote. Mac thinks Arnaud was farther ahead in his development as a high school senior than Meyer was as a high school senior

Arnaud, at one time early in his recruitment, was considered one of the top 100 players in the country. Then he committed to Iowa State and got very few looks from other colleges (why should they waste their time recruiting him? He is an Iowa State legacy recruit. What are the odds of him switching his allegiance? Slim and none) so he slipped in the player rankings because he didn't have mega offers.

I've seen both Arnaud's and Bates' recruiting videos and from what I've seen it looks like Arnaud has a stronger arm. Bates is an amazing athlete and they will find a way to get him on the field if he does not beat out Arnaud. They are both Big 12 caliber qb's IMO so it should be a good battle.

If I was the coach, from what i know know about both players, I would redshirt Arnaud but it doesnt seem like that will happen so I'll go without it, but I would redshirt Bates when he gets here. We should be looking to have Arnaud our starting QB as a Junior with 2 years under Bret. That same year, Bates' redshirt will come off giving him 2 years under Arnaud.
Ideally, i would redshirt Arnaud and Bates and just have them battle it out. in this case, I think that Bates would only get one year of starting QB. if he realizes this early on he could transfer, on the other hand, he could pull an Austin Flynn and be a stud for us at another position. In any case, its hard to tell until he gets on campus and we see what he has surroundong him.
