My wife had a student who's first name was Chinesegirl. She wasn't Asian.

Some people in Asia will pick a "western" name just because it feels cool, not really sure why but they do.

I knew of a young woman in Taiwan about 20 years ago who went by "Ally BcBeal". Yes, the way I spelled it.

I nixed several combinations for our kids. I wanted to make sure that the initials didn't spell something or nearly spell something or worse sound like a phrase or sentence (my Mom's initials when she was a kid were CJP - say it outloud). I also wanted to make sure that my kids - especially the girls - had a name that would command respect on the nameplate of her office door. Women have enough of a challenge in the business world without having to overcome name biases. It may not be right but it is just another thing to have to overcome when you are working your way up in business and have to overcome the bias against a name like Candy. My first daughter we wanted to use a family name (from both sides of the family) but it wasn't necessarily perceived as a strong name. We gave her a given name that was a bit stronger and so we could call her the desired name that was a diminutive of that. She would have the option of using either in the business world.
My last name begins with M. I always liked the name Brian for my son but my mother in law nixed it.

I completely acknowledge some people go overboard trying to be different, but Baylen was the only one I hadn't seen before. The rest were pretty typical names I'd been seeing for awhile.

I'm all for different names. I had 30 kids in my HS class and there were 3 Brians, 2 Matthews, and 2 Amys. And I knew a billion Jens/Jennifers/Jennys in college. My daughter had so many Madison/Maddy, Addison/Addy, and Kaitlynns as classmates it was crazy. I think I saw Kaitlynn spelled abut 8 different way. I also see a lot of Coopers, Noahs, Abigayles, Tylers, and Calebs,

But really, most names are cyclical in their usage. They get broken down into a few categories:
1) biblical names
2) family names
3) names that are over-used by parents thinking they are being original
4) names that are so different that people consider them weird

There are nearly 8 billion people on the planet. There's bound to be some weird in there.
I get what you're saying, but I have personal experience for a perspective. I was stuck with a name that is androgynous and in fact was in the boys' section of the baby books back then. I knew a number of guys with my spelling but didn't meet another girl with my name until i was in my 30s. I spent waaaaay more time spelling my name for people than I would have preferred. Name your child an uncommon name if you want...but make it an actual NAME. And don't get cutesy with the spelling. Your kid may spend the rest of their life being annoyed at having to spell it for people.

Signed,
Someone with a stupid name...

I had to make sure my kids' first and middle names flew off my tongue freely so I could make sure I could properly yell at them. ;)
Yeah once the middle name gets added your in trouble if you get your full name used you re in TROUBLE.

My SIL was a teacher at Expo High School in Waterloo (the "alternative learning center" for those kids that didn't fit in with "normal" students. One of her students' name was pronounced "Shi thead" but was written (with no space) as one word. I've always thought the kid's parents should have attended the same school,

Of course there was the Iowa girl…last name Dicks. First name (shoot the parents) - Fonda. She was an all state player from Moravia along with Machine Gun Molly Van Benthuysen.

For those that don’t know Hereford are predominantly red with a white face. Calf could look good with a gold halter?

I used to show cattle in 4-H, Herefords actually as this is kind of how I first heard about Audi possibly being one of the showpersons before they actually announced it. Anyways that would be a neat color combo for sure however you usually don't use a rope halter when you show there is an actual "show halter" that is leather with a chain that goes under the jaw/chin that is attached to a leather lead. I've never seen one in gold, they are usually black or brown leather. Tried searching Google and not finding one that is solid gold color that isn't some type of rope or non-leather material. Some are still mostly black or brown with some gold plating metal used, would be kind of hard to color leather a gold color unless you bedazzled it with gold sequins or something I guess.

Besides picking a grand champion steer they award 3 other categories too so she has a chance to win either the People's Choice or Champion Showman which is more about who the crowd favorite is or which person they the judge feels did the best job exhibiting the animal and working with the youth exhibitor. She might have a shot at People's choice award given a lot of the ag community in attendance probably has ISU ties, whoever is there needs to cheer loud for her! Ultimately though the biggest thing to come out of it is how much is raised for charity and the bulk of that leg work is done prior to the show by the sponsors and exhibitors. I've heard some of the past youth exhibitors talk about their experience being a part of this show and it's pretty neat to hear what they got out of it as they put in a lot of work fund raising as well as learning about the Ronald McDonald House charity which includes doing some volunteer work with them during the process too. Have a former coworker that did a lot of volunteer work for Ronald McDonald house over the years because they had a daughter that won her battle with Leukemia and their family stayed there while she was going through treatments. Been a neat event at the state fair that is now in their 42nd year of holding it.

Same goes for being named one thing but being called by your middle name your whole life. I am constantly letting people know to call me by my middle name.

I will never name a kid and call them by their middle name.

The Denise and d’nephew deal was what my dad called my cousins. Her name was Denise.

He Also referred to my brother Steve as Fred his entire childhood. No idea where that came from.

I have been to this event many times,…. Probably 20 or so. Supported numerous steers from our 2 county area. Really a great event for Iowa kids, beef industry and the Ronald McDonald houses.
One negative,…. I don’t know if he still is the MC…. But, Andy Petersen, radio personality who used to be at WMT…..was a complete asshat for 2 or 3 years when he interviewed the celebrity showpersons during the show. He is a complete ******* Sukeye troll and would get in jabs and jeers at anything cyclone and hoot and holler bout the Sukeyes. Total douchebag .
Almost makes the whole thing unwatchable.

Couple had a baby girl they hadn't named yet. On the bassinet in the hospital it read FEMALE. That is what they named her. Pronounced FEM-ALL-E.

David Carr won the people's choice award. Definitely sounded like he had quite the cheering section there and looked like he was enjoying himself. Audi did well too, she made top 4 for people's choice award and sounded like she probably had the 2nd best crowd reaction
