Are there any other options...

for internet service besides MediaCON in Johnston? We move to the new house next week and they want to charge us a service call and installation to move our service out there. Don't want dial-up, obviously, and Qwest DSL service isn't available there yet.

You can't get DSL yet? Weird. When we moved into our townhome in Johnston, we couldn't get cable at all. Everyone out here has a dish and DSL. Mediacom kept promising that they could set up the cable lines in a few weeks. I think it took them a year. The only ones I know of for sure out here are Mediacrap and Quest. I guess you could look into that Hughesnet Satelite Internet that they advertise on TV. Might be pricey though, I am not sure.

You could develop gnosiophobia and forget the DSL. Think of the money you will save.

The only other option is a 3G card from Verizon or Sprint. It's slower than most DSL, but will be quite a bit faster than dialup.

If I were you, I'd suck it up and just pay Mediacom. I hate doing it too, but I'm in a situation where they are the only viable option. Their internet is really great, just a bit pricey.

You would only want to do this if you hate yourself.

1.) Expensive
2.) High-latency (no games or VOIP)
3.) Slow
4.) Bandwidth limits (this can cause #3)
5.) Sometimes dialup is better than this

I know this because I live just outside of Ames where there is no mediacom and no DSL. Tried the satelite and really wish I hadn't wasted the money, now I'm in the middle of a contract that is ridiculously expensive to get out of.

I would like to try Sprint of Verizon EVDO adapters, but the cost is just too much on top of the satelite garbage.

Judging by how it performs on my laptop through my phone, it's actually pretty zippy. For just general web browsing and internet use, it's great.

I don't know how well VOIP or games would work, though I can assure you it would be better than satellite.

That's strange. I live in Johnston (GM north) and everyone I know can get DSL but very few of us can get the fiber DSL. You must be in a new development or something?

I have to say that Mediacom Internet is their best product but it's expensive for what you get. Maybe sign up and get their discount and then when that runs out get something else. Just make sure to use gmail or something for your email so you're not tied to their email address.

We just built in Glenstone Ridge, just north of the golf dome by a mile or so. Fairly new development, not a lot of houses yet. Qwest told us DSL wasn't available at our address. I don't hate myself, so I won't go the Hughes Net route

Guess I'm stuck with Mediacon. $30 bucks to switch my service from the old address to our new one. What crap. In this environment you'd think they'd be falling all over themselves to retain customers. All they did here was delay my switch. If they would have done the move for free (like our satellite service) I'd probably not care so much. But, I guess when you have a monopoly you don't need to worry about customer service so much....

Just cancel assuming you're not in the middle of a contract and then order new service at the new home, usually installation is free on new accounts.
