Anyone else hearing that JP has already decided Prohm is coming back?

I'm not forgetting those costs, but those costs are not associated with Hoiberg...they are associated with any hire we make if Prohm is let go. I don't disagree on donors stepping up to pay buyouts; I honestly have no idea if it is true or not. I also don't think JP will hire Hoiberg if the University is on the hook for his buyout because of the $25 Million shortfall from COVID...he will need the money to come from somewhere else.

All I know is that there is interest from Fred in coming to ISU; I have heard enough from 3 different people who do not know each other and are not visitors to the CF forums.

So do these sources believe Hoiberg is interested in ISU because he wants to be there or because he thinks he may be fired by Nebraska?

Like I have said in many previous posts......if TJ is the hire then that's a fairly strong signal that JP is thinking of retirement in about 5 years. Because if/when TJ fails(and 15 wins a year is failing)JP will be gone......TJ will get another mid major job......and ISU will be left to pick up the pieces in basketball. So rest assured that if a 11-14 Mountain West coach gets the job, you can be certain JP does not give a rats rear end about his legacy. This is about friendship...............and donor money.

TJ could be fine, we just don't know.

The time to hire him was 6 years ago though IMO. I think it would have been good for him to take over the program in that state as opposed to one in this state.

As for the Fred thing, the time to hire him was 2 years ago if we didn't extend Steve. It's not now. I really wish we could just close the book on that.

I think every indication from everybody on here and CW is that TJ is one of the best recruiters and one of the most charming of men in the business. He's also the reserved family man type with young children, which is something else that Pollard loves (see the Prohm family and Campbell's family, and even Chizik's back in the day).

Couple that with the CW and Blum pod where Blum hit home the point well and that is you need talent, you need the dudes...that is the baseline, if you can’t get the dudes, you’re sunk. I wholeheartedly agree and ideally a guy who can retain is almost as important in this day and age.

money that comes from those kind of

Don't get me wrong -- those conservative Las Vegas residents work for the entertainment sector.

I just don't think being a dealer at a casino, a chef at a restaurant, or working in the IT department of a Las Vegas resort automatically makes you a hedonist. A very disproportionate share of Las Vegas' population is made up of Hispanics, veterans, and people who left California and Washington to escape the high taxes, high costs, and their politics, and all three of those are three of the most dependably conservative populations you will find.

They take the money from the tourists and then go home to their boring suburban lives, only with more sand.

You don't really know that the interest is genuine. It's not like he or his agent have been above attaching his name to other jobs for leverage at his current job.

That said, if he really wants to come here bad enough there are things he could do to help the situation. Give a hometown discount on salary for starters. Doubtful he wants to return that badly. If he did he would have waited a few years to see how Prohms career unfolded.

I get that and agree. But then the question becomes if he can coach. People have said his UNLV teams don’t look especially well coached.

He’s not getting fired by Nebraska. Hoiberg is interested because he wanted the job after the Bulls but there wasn’t a way for it to happen at the time. He’s still interested but just like last time, it might not be possible for a variety of reasons.

Go live in fort Lauderdale for a few years and you'll see the culture I'm talking about. I haven't been to Vegas and I have actually heard better things in the last 15 to 20 years.

If we won 4-5 conference games this year, then maybe. You don't go 0fer and keep your job, COVID or not..
Exactly, people saying COVID is going to be an excuse - it's not like it's binary. COVID buys coaches some cushion. With huge roster turnover and a COVID year and you are bad but win 5-6 games, that's totally different. Absolutely horrible teams fall ass backwards into a win or two in a full conference slate.

With donors supposedly lined up to take care of the buyouts, do the variety of reasons simply come down to JP not wanting Fred?

I have a $10 Fuzzys gift card here at home. Should I mail it to Fred now?
It might work. Since his family doesn't want to live in Ames, the Fuzzy's closure won't impact him. He'll commute from Ankeny, and he can use that Fuzzy's card there. Right after he buys some $25 underwear at Duluth Trading.

Its a high risk, high reward profession. If it’s TJ and he can attract and retain talent, that tends to cover up a lot “coaching” issues.

Could be. Could also be Fred not wanting to sign a deal that doesn’t favor him. It could also be that no one knows where any coaching candidate sits at the moment, which is what I believe.

those of us against hiring TJ or just trying to prevent (below) , which is what will happen if we hire him.
You have absolutely zero way of knowing what will happen if TJ is hired. Most coaching hires are a gamble so whether it is TJ or Smith or most other candidates it could end up not working or it could work. There were a lot of people who thought the Hoiberg hire was a disaster.

I love Fred, but I'm not interested. He still wants to go back to the NBA. You can tell this by his buyout clause at Nebraska. It's 4x as high if he jumps to a college rank than if he jumps to the NBA.

If that remains (which is has in both his college contracts) he'll have the same issues recruiting.

Its because Nebraska sucks ass. How many P5 programs have never won a game in the tourney IN THEIR ENTIRE HISTORY? The culture there is toxic. That new arena shine is going to wear off sooner rather than later there. It’s a dead end job.
