Any theories as to why the British and French subs collided?

Like anyone with common sense, they assumed that the French sub was moving forward. Unfortunately, since French subs are only equipped with reverse gears...
I've always wondered when the Russians lost that big sub a few years back. At the time they swore it was a collision and they blamed the US. We denied any involvement. Wonder who was right? I think both countries shadow the others all the time.

You all forget the French seemed to have a pretty good army a when Napoleon was around.
