Well, this sounds like its going to have to be a shootout for us to win. Lets hope we can run the ball better than some think we can.

Ths is another outstanding article from Jay.

I (average fan) really enjoy the strategy taking place between opposing coaches. Articles like this helps me see the adjustments taking place.

I agree with Jay that the big 3 (DM, Lazard, and Butler) will have to be the keys against this porous defense. CMC and staff will make the calls for these guys to have a big day.

The key to scoring on Memphis is to make them pay for gambling, because they will gamble, and they are going to guess right a lot of the time. Coaches really need to be working on plays that are counters and misdirections to what ISU has traditionally run this year.

I would like to see the offense take a shot down the middle in the first possession if it is available. One play that seems like ISU has not used very much is the swing pass to Ryen in motion. Not sure why, it looked pretty good the few times they ran it.

Misdirction and play action will be good ways to punish this defense and a good day from Montgomery and the Oline will be the key.

I hope David has 200 plus. He deserves to have a huge day in the spotlight to springboard him into the national awareness next year

"The most open area against the Memphis defense is the deep seams. I expect Iowa State to utilize Butler in these areas extensively."

The issue with that is, I don't recall us going deep very often, if at all, with Kempt at quarterback.

Most of the time you don't need to go deep, especially against a very aggressive defense. If someone gets open in the seem it is usually because someone has guessed wrong. A lot of times the passes in the seems are only thrown 25 yards down field.

Guessed wrong, like with a fart?
Yeah, that will end poorly.

It’s a valid question as to whether we’ll be able to exploit the defense of Memphis if our offense is limited to the horizontal passing and jump balls we’ve utilized with Kempt.
