Talked my FIL and BIL from Sioux City into coming to the WVU game. Before tailgating in the afternoon, they "insist" on going somewhere to watch the Husker game at 11:00 am. OK, whatever. I am always game to watch a Big Red beatdown.

Go to spot for us the last 20 years has been Welch Ave/Pizza Pit. Also been to BWW on Duff.

But I assume there are some better choices. Any suggestions for sports bar that is not too inconvenient to getting to the stadium in early afternoon? And no Tip Top suggestions please. My daughters are minors and we need a nice location.

TIA

Welch Ave/Pizza Pit is not a bad spot. I know another popular spot now a days has been Es Tas. Not sure how busy it will be on a gameday however.

I'm a fan of Welch Ave Station. The past two years, driven from Kansas City to Ames for the first game. Since we don't really tailgate, we go to Welch Ave Station, soak up college football all afternoon until heading over to Jack Trice for the night game.

There are other places around Ames, such as north Ames and downtown. The problem is that those areas are not really good in terms of walking distance to the stadium.

I don't know that you can go wrong, after all, you get to be in Ames on game day.

I'll throw out West Towne Pub as an option. It's easy to get to and has plenty of tv's and a good beer selection if that's your thing. Plus you'll have easy access to campus which is probably your best bet for parking if you don't have a pass, given that the grass lots are all closed. As a bonus, the guy is a good supporter of the Clones.

I love me some WTP (spent many a weekday night there cause they have some nice drink specials) but I’m not a big fan of their TV locations if you aren’t sitting at the bar. And their bar isn’t very big to begin with. Best place with a lot of TV’s that I’ve been to is probably Boulder Taphouse or the the obvious BWW and Jethros. Boulder is very impressive though

Probably a good call on tv location. I haven't been there when it's jam packed, and never on a football game day, only basketball. I've heard good things about BT, but haven't been there.

Old Chicago is a good option as well, plus you're close to the tailgate lots. I've also left a car there before and not been hassled.

The bar in Dublin Bay has tv screens, but not in the regular dining areas. The food would be my reason to go there (with a game as the bonus). Otherwise, probably Jethro's would be my choice to watch a game.

I've never been to the ames boulder tap house but the one in mason city is a good place to go to watch sports. They have a great tap beer selection as well.

Non campustown recs.
Boulder tap if your looking for a large beer selection.
Whiskey has a good atmosphere and some talented bartenders if you catch my drift.
Jethros if you want to feel disgustingly full.
Wallabys for a little bit of everything and if you haven’t been up north in a while.

The majority of the crowd was alumni at Es Tas the last game day I was there, I was pleasantly surprised. That said I do not think they allow under 21 in on game days if I remember correctly.

Welch Ave Station, hands down.

Someone said Wallaby's, but that place isnt the same since they moved to serve the more affluent clientele. I used to love the old place, but ever since it moved, they are trying to be too high end sports type thing. Doesn't vibe with me.
