If you actually read the article, you would learn that the city of Ames is not building a dinosaur museum. It is an out of state developer. Are they not supposed to "consider" development that is brought in front of them? There have been talks for a long time about Menards building IN THE FLOOD PLAIN!!!!!! Oh the horror! I get tired of hearing about that bs. Guess what? The entire city of Ames is in a flood plain. Why don't some of the geniuses that are always lamenting this fact come up with some alternatives instead of ******** about something that you have no investment in and will not affect you in any way? And you know what? If you don't live in Ames, just shut the **** up. You have no reason to comment on what is going on in my city.

That is, until they seek State and Federal funding to clean up the flood damage for the development that they approve.

Interesting on the dinosaur museum. Does ISU have some sort of secretly strong program that would make Ames an attractive place for such a thing?

I was wondering if you were going to show up.

In the city documents it says they will work with Iowa State, Iowa, KU, and some institution in Pennsylvania to create the robotic life-size dinosaurs and other aspects of the museum.

If KU is involved expect to see displays of humans alongside the dinosaurs.

holy **** that rain forest had totally slipped my mind.

Ames will not spend a penny on incentives for the project, its a state program that would re-mit $14 mil in state taxes, seems like a descent deal for the state if their numbers hold up as the development is projected to generate $57.5 mil in state tax revenue over the next 20 years. Details on the financials are found in the city document.

If I had the money, I'd build a mini golf course and outdoor ice cream shop in Ames.

From the city document:
Other amenities are proposed that will be available at this destination and are unique to this location, including zip lines, ropes courses, miniature golf, and
babysitting services during Iowa State University events.

I should have clarrified, inside service is ok, its the lumberyard. When I was doing some things to my house, I went several times to Menards and did not see one employee outside.

The lumberyard is meant to be self-service. They have less than a handful of employees out there.

That's place was old and decaying when I was in college. I was thinking a more modern facility. You would think a place like that would make bank in Ames.

Sounds like there will be a mini golf course with this

My Ames Plan

-Menards would be good.

-5 Guys burgers

-Whataburger...lol

-They do need to redo campus town. Its pretty bad. And there is going to be like 40K students in the next 10 years. Some nice weather gathering space for local bands. some nice looking buildings. Couple more cool resturants in campustown

-Keep working on the mall area (not sure what can be done)

-Create 2 recreation areas with some sort of water flow system (not even close to how to do this.) north of town to fix the flood issues

-also requesting grand be extended to s 16th and a new road be put in from lincoln to S 16th Thus taking pressure off of Lincoln and Duff. making it way easier to get in and out of places on Duff..

-Finally....Redraw some of the land school district that is going to be built on in the future and give it to Ames. (gilbert can have what is currently theirs)
I think its sad that Gilbert is poaching all the Ames kids like that. I know its Ames fault (as always)

Its because Ames is growing like crazy North and Gilbert hijacked a ton of students...
Don't use SE polk as an example. they have about 1000 Sq miles of school district...lol

Don't get me wrong I wish there was a better place to build this stuff, and it makes me mad because I think all these things could be located out of the flood fringe at the site where the new mall was supposed to be, but the smart-growthers had to cause a ruckus and now this is the result. I'm not necessarily against the smart growth concepts (they're generally good ideas), but they should have realized that Ames was going to grow one way or another and the old mall didn't have the space or visibility for that to happen.

All good points. There are multiple projects about to begin in campustown, and I now the city has planned improvements to roads, utilities, etc. in the 5-years CIP for campustown. Hopefully the projects can really improve it. I think NG Mall can be a descent shopping area, but is limited by space and visibility. The proposed mall could have been a game changer imo, but would have likely killed-off NG and hurt other small shops in Ames. It also may have prevented some of the development in the floodway fringe though. Lot of parts in motion right now in Ames, will be interesting to see how everything plays out.

I will say in the mall's case that it looks SIGNIFICANTLY better than it did a couple years ago. Walgreens, Kohl's, TJ Maxx, US Cellular, Great Clips, AT&T, etc. all look significantly better than the area did 5 years ago.
