Just picked up some New China, and usually go with chicken lo mein and orange chicken. What other places in Ames should I look at for getting those. Really have not got Chinese from any place but New China, Little Taipei, and King Buffet for quite a while.

Thanks

House of Chen has really good Orange Chicken, but then again nearly everything on their menu is really good. I recommend the Chef's special chicken. Similar to sesame chicken, but with different spices.

Chinese Home Cooking? I think that is the name of the place. Just past Family Video as you go west on Lincoln Way. I love that place.

Thanks, that is one of the places I was curious about. What about the chicken lo mein? I ask because that is about all the girlfriend will eat (needless to say it is a pretty big deal:smile:).

The Mandarin in downtown is and has been the best chinese food in Ames for 10 + years. Sesame chicken and crispy beef are both great.

cocost hidden on welch and chinese homestyle cooking next to swift stop by the old fighting burrito are the best two according to my chinese ex-roommate.

If you want to get a little crazy Mongolian Buffet is really, really good and is pretty cheap. (8.50 with a drink when I went last saturday) It has the most selection of any buffet I've ever been to in Iowa, has a sushi bar, and you can make your own dishes with all the raw ingredients, choose your sauce and they cook it in front of you.

Chinese Homestyle next to the old Taco Bell is good, Cocost is good, and Golden Wok & Panda are okay like youd expect from a chain. I've heard Mandarin is good, but I've never been there.

Avoid King Buffet, I don't like the food and the next day is always rough even though my stomach is pretty resilient when it comes to food like that. Avoid it.

Yep, this is actually the best Chinese in Ames. The Mandarin is way more bland, and CHC (while fantastic food-wise) doesn't have a great atmosphere.

golden wok uses rabbits trapped by a homeless man. at least they used to. we let him sleep on our porch for a couple of months in exchange for guitar lessons and he used live traps to catch them. we asked what he did with them and he claimed he sold them to the Wok.

and that dirtball never once taught us how to play guitar. i'm not even sure he knew how. we were pretty smashed when we made that deal with him. in hindsight it probably wasn't such a good idea.

You judge your Chinese food based on "atmosphere"? Some of the best Mexican food comes from the back of a parked truck, and the best gyros are sold on the corner of a vomit stained street corner

The two best back in my day appear to be popular in this thread. The one on Welch and the one on Lincoln Way (Angry Chicken is great).

If the food is equal, I will judge on atmosphere, yes.
