If he keeps playing effectively on both sides of the ball (10+ tackles per game, ~10 productive snaps at QB per game), why shouldn't he be in the discussion for the best college football player of 2017, aka The Heisman? SID, get on it!

Tackles is almost a completely worthless stat.

Next you'll tell me that dude for whatever directional Michigan school was the best player in CBB last year because he had the most points per game. Or Texas Tech has the best QB in college football every year because they throw a ton of touchdown passes.

Rain, meet parade.

I need to make sure I really tune in when I can to ISU football to appreciate such a teammate and someone who embodies what college football SHOULD be.

He got a sticker on one of the ESPN talking heads shows yesterday.

No doubt Joel is getting better by game. Once he gets the RB pass coverage reads down he will be a very salty LB. But he has exceeded most people's expectations already, including mine.

More seriously, though -- he could put himself in contention for the Thorpe Award. Especially with a few more sacks and another couple picks.

I hope that we don't have to do that a ton. He was amazing in that game, but I think he has a future at MLB (post-college) and I'm not sure it's fair to ask him to do that game in and game out. Maybe 3-4 plays at most.

Yeah the announcers on Sat said he had scouts looking at him now for a late round draft pick. I never thought of the fact that his body isn’t nearly at beat as everyone else is gonna be at that LB spot coming out of college.

I'm sorry that your cardinal and gold blinders don't let you see that Joel Lanning, while a great teammate and good football player, is not even in the same league as the Heisman Trophy. He's getting headlines for being a great teammate and moving from QB to LB and being willing to step back in as a QB in spots, but to even think he's a top 5 linebacker in the Big 12 is crazy, let alone the best player in college football.

I mean, everyone knows you've got to have Danny Wuerffel-like ability to be considered worthy of such lofty props! just ask Troy Davis.

Nobody honestly thinks he should get the Heisman. But every Iowa State should have fun with this. It's really a cool story. He's making national news because it is a cool story. And he's a Cyclone. And he's a pretty darn good football player.

No need to be an ******* about it.

Just think about how much despair it would cause annoying Hawkeye fans. "Lanning isn't even the best LB in the state! Waaaa! Waaaa!" That thought makes me happy :)

Honestly, though, if he could be productive with 10-12 snaps per game at QB (like a high conversion rate of 1st downs and TDs), he really could be in the conversation. Not a serious contender, but his name would get thrown around. That story is just too good for the producers of halftime shows to ignore.
