ISU did swith its email provider to Gmail, but the email addresses still end with @iastate.edu, and only students get the new email provider (called Cy-Mail)

All students that were on webmail can go through a couple links and convert over to Cymail. (and even some who graduated a couple years ago.). I think theyre planning on moving everyone over eventually..

I guess I'm not familiar with the list server that ISU does use, but can't you set it up to only allow certain users to actually send mail to the list?

Depends on how it was set up and who did it. As a staff person, I use ASW (the old Acropolis) for all my e-mail lists. Works quite well for what I want, including allowing anyone to send to them. I have learned that some IT people here have not heard of using ASW. It doesn't surprise me, because it's pretty simple to use and not all IT people look for simple answers.

These were the best when I used to be at WF. Someone would send out a mass email, then there would be nonstop reply to all's of people saying to stop replying to all.

Then it would finally die down and someone who missed the adventure would come into work and see their inbox flooded, then start the whole process over.
