Didn’t see this discussed yet. ACC is contemplating giving the regular season winner a “Bye” and the conference championship game would be between the second and third place teams.

Beginning of the end of conference championship games IMO

I just saw this and honestly can’t believe this is serious. The 1-4 and 2-3 playoff idea seems obvious to get better matchups and “good wins” but having a “championship” between 2-3 seems like a horrible idea. Especially since they got two in this year because 1 lost in the title game. If they hadn’t they likely only get 1 team in.

Conference runner-up game, they mean.

This is stupid, but if the flawed CFP committee system gives you openings for skipping a CCG, conferences are going to try to sneak their way through those openings.

”Oh, we can get an at-large team in without them playing in our CCG? While our highest ranked team might get upset in a CCG and miss out? How can we game this system to maximize our chances?”

Frankly, this is a great reason to just get rid of CCGs altogether, but conferences are addicted to that money, so making it a “runner up” game instead protects their highest ranked regular season team (which may not have actually played a schedule to prove their first-place finish anyway) while hopefully pumping up the odds that their second-highest ranked team can make the playoff too, all while keeping the money from that “championship that’s not actually a championship” game.

This is as good of an idea as the Big12 claiming that TCU and Baylor as co champions of the league during the first CFP.

Josh Pate laid this entire idea out on a podcast two months ago. Either they took this idea from him or it’s seriously being discussed and not just in the ACC.

Option 1 would "protect" the top team, but I'm not sure 2 v 3 would provide a better path for an at-large. If #3 wins is it getting a bid anyway? I guess if it's super-tight like 2024 season, this idea would be OK.

For option 2 -- 1v4 / 2v3 has been floated (not just ACC, by Big 12/ISU fans over the years). Are the other teams' schedules rearranged for the final week? Or is ACC going to play just 7 conference games or something silly like that?

What a ridiculously stupid idea, but no more stupid than a 10-team/round robin schedule Big 12 conference having a championship game to begin with.

Add to all of this unlimited transfer/immediate eligibility and unlimited NIL pay and college football has become a complete joke.

Couldn't have said it better myself!

Possibly the best sport there is IMO... and it's being completely ruined. Sad to see.

Also, side note, poor-writing alert.

... the ACC could consider ... the teams that finish second or third in the league standings play in the ACC championship game.

—> Second AND third would play. Not "or." One team isn't playing itself.

Hey let's give the winner of the college football playoffs a bye and then have the 2nd and 3rd place teams play in a national championship game!

Does anyone even care about college football right now?

I feel like they've overstayed their welcome, we are a solid 3 weeks now since bowl season,it's the NFL playoffs, and I've already moved on to basketball season. All they are doing is pushing this crap even further back which is eating into Big Monday.

I say go bonkers -- give the four SEC teams highest-ranked in preseason a bye until national semifinal round. None need to play any regular season games.

Or top two each from BiG and SEC, to be "completely fair."

@isufbcurt

What's so dumb about this? The NFL has already gone from 14 teams to 4 since we've even had a college game. I honestly forgot about the game tommorrow night. The season has just gone on way too long now.

Two or 3 weeks ago I would have been pretty excited to watch it but not on January 20th.
