Right now we are 189 and all the teams we beat are higher than us.

Does our "vs Top 100" change if the teams we beat move up or down or is it based on the time we played them?

yes, I know it's early.

They are higher because they've played a road game against an undefeated team would be my guess. The RPI is meaningless until at least conference games start.

"RPI is made up of three components: 25 percent comes from a team's own winning percentage, 50 percent from its opponents' winning percentage, and 25 percent from of its opponents' opponents' winning percentage."

From what I understand, the biggest problem with RPI is it's over emphasis on strength of schedule. Who you play is generally more important than who you win or lose to. So beating bad teams can cause you to drop while losing to good teams is rewarded. It also doesn't take into account margin of victory. The consensus seems to be that this is an outdated method of ranking teams.

It comes down to if you have a rating system that only uses W/L and not margin of victory, there's two options:
1) a system where wins always moves your rating up even if against bad teams, and losses always move you down, an example is the Elo rating system
2) a system where losses to good teams is sometimes viewed more favorably than wins against bad teams, RPI is an example

The problem with the first is when a team has control over it's schedule, it can be advantageous to not play many good teams and improve your rating by loading up on cupcakes. The RPI isn't perfect but it has had a positive effect on college BB scheduling overall and is generally reasonably accurate by the end of the year.

By using the current RPI formula and having it weigh heavily it has accomplished one great thing, and that is lots of P5 non con matchups. I like it for that reason. It's a little crazy that you can win even in conference and drop.
Other than having to break in a young team, you pretty much want as tough a non con as possible.

It cannot be explained. It is beyond understanding. A mystery we should not strive to understand.

It's possible but would take a combination of losing to another top team and having enough cushion that no one jumps you.
the way I read that is if you are #1 and lose you may not lose your spot because only 25% is based on your results and 50% is based on your opponents results? So if your opponent beat the #1 team... or am i looking at that incorrectly?

As for this part, the vs. "Top 100" et al is based on opponents' current RPI, so those numbers will change as season progresses.

To show how early it is, ISU has one top-50 win: The Citadel! (it was 40 before the game -- although results & ranks haven't been updated after Citadel game yet, when I checked ... TC's rank is going to begin dropping fast).

I am sorry but if Prohm is going to run a program that can't be better RPI ranked than 85th at 12:54 on November 21st than I don't know where this is headed.

We are ranked 79 spots behind Elon... SEVENTY ******* NINE SPOTS ... ******* ELON PEOPLE!!!!

You also only get .6 credit for home wins and 1.4 credit for road wins I think. We played all home games, against bad competition, it's going to be bad.

That said I think it's underrated, as really most people only actually care about the outcome of games, against the schedule, and not a lot of other tomfoolery that goes into some other metrics.
