Big upset tonight in Dallas as unranked SMU sweeps #2 Nebraska (who was expected to rise to #1 after Texas got beat by #18 Minnesota)

Wow, was also surprised that Wisconsin lost twice this past weekend while playing in Milwaukee.

Texas ended up sweeping Baylor.

Pitt has not lost a set so far this season. Watched some of their match last night and they look damn good and the national title favorite at this point.

Here are the current B12 AVCA ranked teams (thru 9/16):
#10 - Kansas 7-0
#14 - AZ State 8-1
#19 - BYU 4-3
#20 - Baylor 7-2
#23 - TCU 5-2
Receiving votes - Houston

I thought ISU could legitimately contend for the conference title this season based on returning talent, quality of newcomers and UT's exit but the team obviously has to significantly improve in order to do so.

The production of the OHs have been the biggest issue so far IMO. Gonzalez's play has regressed to the point of getting benched last weekend vs USD although she recovered and had good numbers vs Montana St. And the production of Wachholz/Schmitt at the 3rd OH spot has been inconsistent and below average. Obviously their numbers get impacted if the back row passing and setting isn't up to speed and they have had their issues at times as well.

With the non-con losses to UNLV, UTEP and USD, the team is in danger of missing the NCAAs if they end up on or close to the at-large bubble so they need to play much better this weekend, improve during conference play, get in a position to at least contend for the conference title and avoid the bubble.

I'm surprised some bigger school ($$$) hasn't come along and hired ($$$) that Pitt coach away yet. He's done an unreal job there.

For anybody in NE Iowa that enjoys good Volleyball, UNI has Texas A&M in tonight and SMU on Saturday and Sunday.

Should be some really good matches.

They need another solid hitter. I was wondering why they didn’t bring in a transfer or freshman pin this year since they lost Annie Hatch from last year.

Agree on the need for a 3rd OH to step up and be productive on a consistent basis. CJL must have figured either Wachholz or Schmitt could do so without bringing in a OH transfer.

Since they did bring in two MB transfers, I am wondering if McCune can effectively move to OH and backfill her MB spot with Jackson.

B12 VB results from last night:

UC wins @ WV 3-0
#9 KU sweeps UCF at home
UH wins @ KSU 3-0 (KSU is now a somewhat stunning 2-8. Don't know what's up with them)
#19 Baylor beats Arizona 3-1 at Waco
#14 AZ State sweeps #22 TCU at Ft Worth (Watched some of that match. ASU is very impressive.)

ISU hosts WV on Saturday afternoon in the conference opener. ISU's non con performance was not as stunning as KSU's but highly disappointing.

Biggest question mark now is the status of Gonzalez who has not played the past two matches and when she has played, her production is not up to what it was last season. Not sure if injuries or conditioning are the the main issue with her. VanGorp has also not played the last two matches, presumably due to health reasons.

Due to the inordinate number of losses to mid major opponents so far (UNLV, UTEP, South Dakota) and two more losses to unranked P4 teams (Illinois, Syracuse), the team now has to be finish Top 4 IMO in conference play to have a shot at the NCAAs.

Aggies go in to Austin and win in 5...18-16 in the 5th. First home conference loss for UT in about a decade.

For those previously not aware of this story, this situation could become more prominent as SJSU racks up more forfeit wins, wins the MWC as a result and potentially qualifies for the NCAAs. SJSU is currently a half game out of first place. Not mentioned in this article is that SJSU’s setter and co-captain has joined a lawsuit vs the NCAA for allowing the transgender teammate to play.

The setter is involved in a lawsuit affecting her teammate’s ability to play? That would make for some interesting team dynamics.
