Cmon man, you seriously want to see teams like Minnesota and TCU in the field? This is what your implying with statements like this.

I want the best 37 at large teams in the tournament.

Drake is not one of those teams.

Oklahoma really should be out. They played a terribly weak non conference too. I’d like to see Drake in, but they don’t really have the resume either. I think they deserve it more than OU though.

No, but @alarson is implying teams like that should be given a chance because if they would only be allowed in they could turn into NC St like last year.

His points are valid - I just happen to disagree. I’d rather have the MWV regular season champ (if they get upset in the conference tournament) who went 27-3 than the 13th best team in the SEC. I’d rather see more of the mid-majors get shots because it’s clear P6 teams don’t want to play them.

But OU probably beats Drake and is certainly more talented and could go farther but give me more teams that don’t have every built in advantage like OU and P6 teams do who lose 3/4 of their opportunities against good teams.

@alarson you're implying TCU and Minny type of teams should be in?

Nope. Minnesota's metrics would not indicate they would be one of the 37 best at large teams, and their 0-6 vs quad 2 and bad q3 loss has their resume nowhere near the tournament.

So you basically want about 90% of the at-large teams to come from the Power-5 program. That makes no sense to me but your entitled to your opinion.

I want the best 37 teams to be at larges.

If that means that most of them come from P5 because that's where the best ones are now due to those conferences increasing the talent gap over the ones below, then so be it.

We all understand why the big 12 deserved more bids when it was head and shoulders the best league in college basketball. The P5 are collectively doing this as well over the remaining leagues.

NC State was 65th last year after they won the ACC tourney, much lower before that. So let's say he wants the 65th rated teams to get an at-large becuase if just given a chance they could go on a Final 4 run.

Those teams that fall into that same range right now are Nebraska, USC, Kansas St, Rutgers, TCU, Oklahoma, and Northwestern.

Do you honestly any of those teams should be in the tournament?

You're really good at making up straw men

I think everyone knows you like Drake. I'm not hammering you on that but you're being a little wild with this all.

It also goes the other way too. For every NC State you have to remember teams like George Mason, Butler, and Florida Atlantic.

How so? He literally used NC State from last year as an example of why more Power 5 teams should get bids.

You're right, I like Drake, I would also like to see some other teams like VCU, Utah State, Colorado State, and Boise State make it over teams like Oklahoma.

He obviously has a completely different approach and wants mostly Power 5 teams to snag all the at-larges.

I mean at the end of the day, drake's numbers don't show they should be an at large.

But really, all drake has to do to make the tournament is:

Win a low quad 3/quad 4 game against Indiana State\Southern Illinois
Win a game against their likely opponent belmont (quad 3 if so)
Win a game against likely opponents UNI or Bradley (quad 2 if so).

Not exactly a high hurdle to cross for a team wanting to be in the tournament. They don't even need to notch another quad 1 win and they're in. I don't see how one can be upset about them missing out if they can't clear this incredibly low bar.

That's not what he said. He literally said it was a miracle run:
Look at NC State last year. They were 17-14 coming into the postseason. Probably aren't even in the field. But they got in due to their miracle run in the acc tournament

No, I used them as an example for how an underdog/cinderella story doesn't have to come from a lower conference, and how the underdog story can apply to any team that no one is expecting to succeed.

And also with teams like Drake (if they don't win the conference championship).

The 'they can only play who they schedule' argument goes out the window when they don't actually beat everyone on that schedule. A weak schedule means the margin for error for an at large is slim to none. Losses to UIC and Murray are enough when they don't have the quality wins to cancel those out.
this. yeah Drake has racked up a ton of wins. and if they had maybe ONE Q3 loss I'd be on board with them as an at large. But three Q3 losses coupled with a LOT of close OT games just says while yes they're winning the games in front of them, are they one of the 68 best teams? to me they aren't. to others they are. maybe they'll not win the MVC tourney and get put in Dayton...i could see that if they make the final in St. Louis. But they lose before the final and I don't think they get in.

oof. cherry picking is the best!
I think Drake is a good team. They play their butts off. But their situation is just kinda the nature of the beast.

A lotta people play the "do you wanna see Cinderalla or the big named school?"
TV eyeballs usually show us people would rather watch the big named school.
