Twins are going to eat $22 million to release Phil Hughes. Too bad, but with all of his injuries they had no choice. Twins gambled and lost.

If they're going to eat 22 million, why wouldn't they just keep him?

Guessing that after Hughes clears everything that the Yankees might sign him to a minor league contract. Others might be interested but it will be his choice and guessing the history with Yanks might find him a minor league spot in their organization.

He's not really giving them much....why waist a 25 man roster spot on him? (He's not likely to accept an assignment to the minors)

I agree that eating that kind of $$ is not ideal but, it's what they need to do

That was my initial thought as well. My guess is they can't send him to the minors and they want a roster spot for younger players to get some experience.

Tough decision on the dollars but sound from a baseball and roster perspective. Pineda is starting to throw and might even be back yet this fall. With him back there is no place for Hughes even next year. At some point the Yankees need to bite the bullet and do the same thing with Ellsbury. Going to be painful as he eats up hugh salary "cap" but he is done and no one will ever trade for him if they can get him for minor league nothing money after he is released.

Yeah, at this point, Hughes is providing no value at all being on the roster. With May and Santana on the verge of returning, there just wasn't a place.

Maybe they will be able to trade Hughes for a low level prospect if they eat 99% of his salary.

Well, Twins were able to trade Hughes which surprises me. Guessing the cash part was substantial for the Padres to take on two years of salary. Still better than eating the whole salary that I was expecting.

Getting the Padres to pick up close to $7 million of Hughes' next year salary is a great deal for the Twins. If Villalobos is half way decent the 3rd rounder the Twins gave up will be a wash.

Twins had a solid pick last night at #20 with OSU's Larnach, but I have no idea what they were thinking taking Jeffers at #59. Even though the pre-draft boards have been shown to be fairly inaccurate, with Jeffers rated at #295 the Twins scouts must be seeing something everybody else is not.

Nice to see us get 3 against the Tribe. The Central hasn't shown much this year, so no reason the Twins shouldn't keep fighting away.

The Twins sending Sano to single A Fort Myers, a year removed from an All-Star year, seems a little extreme. Agree that something needed to be done, as he was swinging at every slider thrown at him, but single A?

So is byron just a bust? Watching him in Crapids he seemed like a sure thing.

2 things I'll add:

1) Sounds like he has a good relationship with the singe A hitting coach and they think that's the guy that can fix his swing/pitch recognition issues

2) They want him to get in shape and the best weight room and S &C facility in the mirror league system is in ft mayers where the single A team and Spring training is

Yup, likely more going on than just tweaking his swing. Saw this take (from a writer who supposedly likes Sano a lot) linked from the Star Trib comments. Title is misleading to the actual contents.

Agree, this is more than working with a particular coach or losing weight at a nice facility. If Sano doesn't want to pay attention to the directives of the staff and coaches in Minneapolis, it may be awhile before he's back.
