No reason we can't hang with Iowa for the title. They are really loaded this year though. We really need to be able to beat them head to head, something we didn't do well last year...

Here is Iowa's ranked wrestlers

125 #3 Charlie Falck (Sr.)
133 #1 Joey Slaton (Jr.)
141 #13 Dan LeClere (Jr.)
149 #1 Brent Metcalf (Jr.)
157 #13 Ryan Morningstar (Jr.)
165 #9 Colby Covington (So.)
174 #2 Jay Borschel (Jr.)
184 #4 Phil Keddy (Jr.)
HWT #13 Dan Erekson (Jr.)

They should be better with the return of Alex Tsirtsis at 141 who should be ranked anywhere from #5 - #8.

I wish we would have lost Colby Covington to any other team than Iowa... He really fills a weak spot for them.

Iowa will be tough, I give them that. Can't wait until the meet, it should be a barn burner. Any idea of who will be in at 174 for the clones?

Todd Becker (So.), Mitch Artist (So.), and Billy Lewis (RFr.) will split time until someone emerges as the clear favorite. Chris Spangler (Fr.) might see time if the three don't impress. Cael brought in a true freshman last year at mid season (Tyler Clark), so I wouldn't be suprised if Spangler comes in.

There is still a rumor going around that 2x NCAA Qualifier Duke Burke (Jr.) will win his appeal and be eligible. Burke is the transfer from Northern Illinois who was not granted a release.

interesting to see covington rated #9 with reader at #4. 2007-do you think if covington would have committed to isu he could have moved up to 174 and made an impact for us?

I'm not a big wrestling fan at all, but I'm thinking about going to the meet this year. Everyone says it's just utter chaos and true wrestling fans are absolute lunatics. Sounds fun! Does anyone tailgate beforehand?

When I talked to Covington in St. Louis, he said Cael was recruiting him to possibly wrestle at 174. He also thought that Reader would move up to 174 and he didn't want to have to compete with a good friend (Nate Carr Jr.) for the 165 spot.

He really is a better fit for Iowa.

The Iowa match should come down to 141 and not giving up bonus pts @ 149, 174, or 184 (or possibly scoring an upset). My sources tell me that Dan Dennis is wrestling @ 141 and at this early point looks as good or better than LeClere or Tsirtsis.

As far as our problems @ 174 I think we might yet see Reader move up at least some time and that Carr might get some opportunity there as well. Spangler's red shirt and Burke unfortunately won't be the answer this year.

No worries - Covington is terribly overrated @ #9.

Covington is pretty good, if you are going to say he is over-rated at 9 then you could say the same for Reader.

I agree that Covington is a better fit for Iowa at this point. Kid likes to party though, which at Iowa might cause some problems.

"Pretty good" and #9 in the nation are very different. Reader's a proven D1 commodity (who physically dominated Covington last year). Being a JUCO Champ is impressive but I'll believe #9 when I see it (or don't).

So is Carr just going to be a backup behind Reader? Seems like he should bulk up and do 174.

if duke burke gets a release, our team is going to be stacked. ive been watching burke for a while since NIU was my favorite wrestling team growing up. if anyone else remembers, i think he was the only one from NIU to win against us at last year's opener.

If you want to tailgate in sub-freezing temps go ahead.
