Iowa was ranked #8, ISU barely beat a non-BCS team the weak before. No one expected it. How can we do it again?

- Hope Claiborne punches someone else?

- Count on special teams & takeaways?

- Try some deep passes? Misdirection? No-huddle?

- Could there be another Drew Tate type injury?

- Should we wear our throwback unis again?

I know most are downplaying this game, but think about the momentum shift in both programs if we somehow won.

It's funny how him and Bret Meyer were so tight yet if you ran into them at the bars (which I have on several occasions up until a few months ago) they were polar opposites. Todd was a cocky wannabe while Bret was laid back and friendly.

But anyways, back to the point...the big difference between this year and 2005 is the game is in Iowa City

Bigger differences include -

1. In '05, the ISU DL was REALLY good and owned match-up advantages against the Iowa OL. Entering the '10 season, that does not appear to be the case.

2. In '05, the ISU OL owned substantial advantages over an Iowa DL that was comprised of first-year starters who lacked pretty much any prior game experience. In '10, the ISU OL is facing a push, at best.

3. In '05, ISU was also a bit more veteran across the entire D. That matters. In '10, with the exception of Parker, the ISU D is pretty much only veteran in the secondary.

4. In '05, the ISU squad seemed to enjoy, overall, pretty decent coaching continuity. What's more, many of the coaches on the squad had been around for a while. In contrast, while the current coaching staff is clearly VERY good ... it's still only in its 2nd year at ISU. Thus, it's likely that there are still plenty of "growing pains" that the program will experience as the current coaching staff fully implements their systems and recruits and integrates the sort of players that they want in the program.

Oh yeah ... and the game is in Kinnick.

Our defense needs to rip their heads off if were gonna win. It's all riding on our defense.

Amen. I'm not worried about our offense, but we lose a shootout to Iowa, we MAY need a nebraska-esque game. It's the Cy-Hawk Series so anything can happen and I hope it does. But it's gonna have to be a perfect storm for a repeat of 2005 to happen.

The game this year won't be like '05, but then again it also won't be like last year, which I'm sure a lot of people are just assuming. AA isn't going to throw 4 INTs this year, and ARob isn't going to be fumbling the ball.

God I hope not. It was brutal last year watching us gift wrap the game for them and get outcoached.

We have to hope that Stanzi throws a couple of int's, some pick 6's would be nice and that Arnaud does not throw any int's, unlike last year.

I think to win the Iowa game we need to play with 10 offensive players and then replace one of our receivers with our best defensive back to cover Tyler Sash. :jimlad:

In order to win at Kinnick this year, ISU would need to:

1) Attack a relatively inexperienced OL, and force Stanzi et al to make mistakes. That might allow ISU win a low scoring game, if their offense can't get too much past Iowa's defense.
2) Attack a relatively inexperienced LB corp, which might be one of the weaker parts of the Iowa defense.
3) Not turn the ball over so much. Now, whether that's by way of better offensive ball control, or a weaker Iowa defense, probably depends on which team you're rooting for. /shrugs

AND perhaps most importantly...

4) Get into the endzone. Unless the goal is another 5 FG win. Possible, but would you want to risk it?

IN 2005 we did it with a good consistent push up the middle from Leaders and the terrific middle LB, Dobbins. Getting that push up the middle ultimately caused Tate to make mistakes (not to mention Tim Dobbins bouncing him off the turf). Jake, Rump and Johnson are the guys who can really make a differenced vs Iowa. iF they can get a push up the middle, it could make a big difference.

I read that DMR article. That picture of Jake in his four point stance without helmet. Whoa. Looks like a freakin' Clydesdale.

We need to have a strong defense. Our offense will most likely struggle moving the ball and scoring on Iowa. IF we can step up defensively and keep their offense off the field we may be able to wear their defense down. However, if they move the ball with ease, it will be a long day.

IDK about just the Iowa game but I could see a 2005 repeat season-wise or something close. I could see us coming fast out of the gate, meet the gauntlet and stumble in the middle of the schedule and pick it up at the end. Hopefully it doesn't end in a heart breaking loss like 04 and 05 on the last reg season game.
