Wow, haven't seen one like this before. Read the story to get what happened, but basically after a brief "altercation", although it can barely be called that, one team got to shoot 18 free throws with 12 seconds to play and wins the game by 6. One thing is for sure though, the kid shooting for the winning team is Mr. Clutch, 17-for-18 to end the game? Pretty awesome. Even though it probably was officiated incorrectly, still pretty funny.

I'm not a referee but I'm not sure 6 players leaving the bench = 6 techincal fouls. At least I've never seen it called that way before.

Leave the bench: 1 T to player, 1 indirect to head coach
Participate in the fight: above penalty and player is also disqualified

Looks like both coaches probably had to be ejected as well. That would be way more than enough indirects.

What I'm not sure on ... (my books at home) is whether you'd shoot all the free throws or they'd cancel out. I'm leaning towards shoot them all. So it appears they're in the right.

i like the headline... "a rare 17 point play" perhaps "unheard of" would have fit better.

They should cancel out. The one team would still shoot the difference.

ok, so the ball would be dead from the initial foul so all the technicals occur at the "same time" right? So you'd shoot the difference... makes sense, in 8 years I've never had more than 1 at a time.

On the video it looks like the kids just stood up and didnt come on to the court. The people on the court were coaches coming to grab their players...

Regardless of whether they got the call right or not, that kid that shot the 18 free throws is a stud.[/quote]

My dad was coaching a Sophmore game one time and the home team never came to say "3 minutes till end of half". oh, no they came into say the game is starting. Came out of the locker room to the gym only to see the ref put the ball down and start counting to 5. So the 5 starters ran into the game to throw the ball in, only to have five (5) technicals called because no one checked in before entering the game.

Good times.....

Maybe the RARE 17 point play was the correct headline, who would ever think this would be possible.

That was administered wrong imho. The rules require each team to be notified with 3 mins to go at halftime. If they weren't told they should have been given 3 mins (or a reasonable amount of time) from when they were told.

The only gray area I could see is if the home court claims they DID notify your Dad and he took his time assuming they'd wait. In that case, you're sol.

I hate it when refs think people come to watch them ref. They can kill a game real fast.

That would still be wrong, I think. At the half, the players don't have to check in. The coach has to inform the book as to his 5 starters. If he fails to do so, its a single T and not 5 individual ones.

I don't think that's the case here. The only thing that may have gone down wrong was certain T's not cancelling each other out (meaning they wouldn't shoot them - they're still assessed). Every coach in the land knows the minute a kid / coach / waterboy steps on the court that isn't one of the 5 playing its bad news. Times 100 if there is a fight in progress and they are looking to join in.
