    Why the NBA playoffs are so appealing right now: either a team will win an NBA championship for the first time ever (Pacers, T-wolves)... or one will win it for the first time since the 1970s (Knicks, Thunder... since apparently they get to count the Sonics' championship in 1979).

    Sure, Des Moines went nuts for the Barnstormers back in the day. And perhaps the AFL made a big mistake demoting them to AF2 during their push to try to make AFL big time. But that was also 30 years ago. Not sure how well it would go these days.

    It also really makes it nearly impossible for the really bad teams to ever improve. The NBA draft isn't like the NFL draft - in any given year the franchise players are drafted by the first 3 picks... which means if you're a team like the Wizards or Hornets and are always drafting in the 4-6...
