Not exactly sure.
Not until college. I had less than stellar attendance especially when it came to the random required general credits. Psych 101 for example I took a semester with with 4 other 300 and 400 level engineering courses, attendance for 101 was maybe 50% but still an easy A-. Handful of Wednesdays a few of us would blow off class to golf 36 holes at Honey Creek, $35 for unlimited holes.
101……. I went to class twice.

Junior yr of HS (mid 90's no cell phones) a good friend of mine moved away to a school the size of ames high. For whatever reason I didn't have school on a day she did. So I went to surprise her and pulled her out of school by telling the office I was her brother and "our parents" had been in a car accident.

Her face was priceless when she saw it was me and not her brother. We spent the afternoon splitting a 6 pack and rocking out to music. I was quasi-hoping something more would happen but the opportunity never presented itself. I felt better about this situation about a yr later when she came out.

We stayed in touch for about another 6 months then drifted away. We met up in person about 10 years ago for the first time since HS and she brought up that moment.

The girl I dated in HS used to call herself in tardy all the time and pose as her mom. Not to skip completely, but just so she could miss first period or leave campus for lunch. She was also a very good student. Anyway, she got caught and got in deep sh*t with her parents so that was the end of that.

I found out we weren't going to be allowed to see UNI play Missouri in the NCAAs way back when, so I went home for lunch and stayed there to watch it.

Once I left, the teacher got a TV for the room to watch the game, but it was still better at home.

This isn't exactly similar, but one of my favorite memories. I grew up about 2.5 hours from Ames and when I was in middle school it was often my Dad and I going to the men's basketball weeknight games. So that meant that you'd often get home between 11:30 and 12. The deal was that I had to wake up for school the next day without prompting or being crabby. Anyway, I woke up one day with a terrible head cold and feeling terrible. I drag myself down for breakfast (because I had to be at school in order to go to the game that night) and my parents tell me that the weather looked bad and we wouldn't be going to the game. I was so miserably sick that I said I wasn't going to school and went back up to bed without even asking if I could stay home. Turns out the weather didn't end up being bad and after a day of rest I was feeling OK and we could get to Ames. I don't think the game was anything special, but those games were so important to me.

I'm legitimately interested in what others do in regards to work and hooky. I get 17 days of vacation plus 7 days of sick time every year. Both roll over.

I always tell myself "I should just call in sick one of these days and take a day off randomly." But I can never bring myself to do it. I think it's because A) I've always got things that rely on me so I feel like I'm putting more on others just so I can get a free day off and B) I can't bring myself to lie to people when they would ask "Are you feeling better after being sick yesterday?"

What do other people do?

I have 6 months of sick leave built up. Ours can be used as work time when we retire. But we can't cash it out or use it as vacation. But I get 5 weeks of vacation, so I have a hard enough time getting to my use or lose balance by the end of the year.

I have no problem taking an occasional mental health day. But I do think I'll have more sick time this year---we got forced back to the office full time for no reason, so now I am unable to telework when I am well enough to work but too sick to be around other people. This winter I had Covid followed by a cold and spent about 4 weeks fairly sick. I ended up taking a day and a half of sick leave even though I was still working at home. But I think I'd probably have to take 4-5 days if I was going into the office because there's no way I should have been around people.

I started a $2/bracket NCAA tourney pool in 7th grade that ran through SR year. My parents called me out of school for those two opening round days every year starting then. Went from 12 to 110 people the first to last year. Only thing my parents ever got me out of school for, and I've taken those 2 days off from work ever since.

I coulndnt play hooky in HS, my neighbor was the principle. Now college skipped a lot of classes because why not still ended with a 3.2 gpa if I would tried somewhat my GPA would have been higher but it never cost me a job so whatever I had fun.

This one is a little embarrassing. And only a few of you will understand. During my sophomore year of high school I was home sick one day. Even though I was fine the next morning, I stayed home "sick" an extra day so I could watch Luke and Laura's wedding on General Hospital. I don't regret it as I got to see Scotty's surprise return when he caught the bouquet at the end of the episode.

Not in HS.

And in college I think I missed a total of one Friday afternoon class to get home early for something (I don't even remember what it was now). I was still paranoid I missed something important that would be on the final. Even had a class mate copy her notes for me.

At work I took some skip days. There was a long gap in holidays between February and the End of May and when the weather turns nice I get really antsy to be outside. I would look at the calendar and decide which week was halfway between the holidays and schedule a day to be 'sick' on Tues, Wed, or Thurs. If the weather sucked I'd wait a day or two to be sick.

I never felt bad about it. It really rejuvenated me and feeling like you were getting away with something had a certain evil joy to it.
