What does the Executive Membership do?

I have the Citi/Costco card that has a decent cash back that really does pay for my current membership. I try to fill up at the Costco station because they recently went up to 5%.

I get Kirkland chicken tenderloins, frozen veggies and their coffee as regular stuff and some other things. Occasional clothes but I try to avoid clutter.

Their deli ready-made stuff is generally very good and their breakfast stuff from the bakery is the bomb diggity.

Pays a higher percent back, we get the exec membership because it pays for itself in a few months.

With the insane growth rate in Grimes/waukee I don't think thatd be a concern.

Oh I do. The West Des Moines store is exactly what Costco strives for. The last thing they want is an overlapping foot print and that's what a Grimes location would do, it would just be pulling a lot of current members to a different store.

Just thinking about this and there are 3 Costco’s in the Columbus metro. And the most recent one isn’t very old. Columbus metro is like 3X the population of DSM metro and the actual square mileage is probably even more than 3X that of DSM.

The interesting thing is that they are all on what I would consider the “north side” of the metro. Nothing south. That tells me their calculation has an income component to it as well.

I asked the gal checking us out about the muffins, and she said they were getting a lot of complaints that the muffins were too large. Now they have an 8 pack and are smaller, I told her the size was not the issue for us, but the fact that you could not purchase just one 6 pack, but had to purchase 2 of them. They let you purchase just one 8 pack of muffins.
We had the executive card for years, but finally switched over last year to the cheaper version to save some money.
Well now you can get one pack for basically the same price as you use to get two.

They are doing it here in the western Milwaukee suburbs. Waukesha County has 400k people and Costco is in the process of getting a 4th Costco here. Granted, they are spread out pretty well -- the current 3 are all around 25 minutes apart, and the new one would be about 20 minutes from the closest of the three. And two of them are near the edge of Milwaukee County, which has none.

A good snack item from Costco is the Kirkland signature super-large peanuts. They are described as roasted and salted, Virginia variety, extra crunchy. They come in a 2 1/2 pound can.

Which makes sense. Look at how densely populated those areas are. A second Costco on the west side of the metro makes zero sense.

Anyone else buy movie theater gift cards there from Cinemark? You get $50 worth for $40 and can load them in the app. I go to a movie once a week and it's effectively a 20% discount at the movie theater.

You mean there's no Costo in White(trash)hall or Reynoldsburg? Lol.

I'm surprised there's nothing on the east side, I remember Gahanna being a pretty nice 'burb.

That's fair. There's maybe around 700k people living within 30 minutes of the two DSM-area Costcos. In the Milwaukee area, there are five including the proposed one (four in Waukesha County, one in Washington County), and I estimate around 1.7m people living within 30 minutes of one. It seems to me DSM could support a third store, but Grimes might be an odd choice.

( rough approximations using https://www.freemaptools.com/find-population.htm )

To me it's just the overall quality of what I buy. Sam's honestly just feels too "Wal-Mart" for me and I was honestly never impressed with anything that they had. In MN Costco was about a 20 minute drive so we'd go once a month - now in Waukee I'm 10 minutes from Jordan Creek and get there right when they open on Sundays - can usually be in and out within 20 minutes.
I feel like Costco is more consumer oriented and Sams is more Business oriented. It seems like I just like the quality of items and what Costco has more than Sams.

Love Costco, seems like it's nearly impossible to get out of there spending <$200, but I keep going back. Frequent purchases:

- Clothes - like Gunner said, almost always find SOMETHING that I want/need. Wife makes fun of me cause 99% of my wardrobe is either ISU or from Costco (sometimes both).
- Rotisserie Chicken - bigger than any supermarket, and cheaper at just $5
- Kirkland Vodka/various bourbons
- Dunkin ground coffee
- Claritin - wife uses it year-round & it's way cheaper there
- Protein powder
- TP/Paper towels/Laundry + Dish detergent
- Pizza/Hot Dogs from food court

Also buy a lot of bigger ticket items there - electric lawnmower & leaf blower, pool, iPad, just bought tires last week, rented a couple cars thru them.
A coworker of mine calls it the three hundred dollar store since you can't get out of there without spending $300 or more lol.

I have a Costco about 3/4 of a mile from me

Gas
Pre-cooked bacon
Bacon pieces
Cashews
Glasses
Golf gloves

About once every 4 years I'll drive 10 miles to Oregon and buy tires, no state sales tax

Madison metro is up to 700k I believe and we're now at 3 Costcos.
