Iowa State athletics director Jamie Pollard joins me to discuss the recently concluded basketball and wrestling seasons in Ames, along with contract extensions for Steve Prohm and Bill Fennelly. Pollard gives candid thoughts on fan reaction and the NBA's one and done rule. Plus, a look ahead to the 2019 football season as well.

I listened to the Hines podcast a week ago and wondered if it would be worth it to listen to another 50 minutes or so of Jamie. The answer is yes it was worth it. The guy has a wealth of knowledge and a refreshing candor that makes him very interesting. I know he’s not one to take credit for things but I can’t imagine where this athletics department would be without his leadership. I hope he has a good succession plan in place. It would be nice to continue on this trajectory when he decides to hang it up.

We are very lucky to have him. I've said on here before he isn't perfect, but he gets it right a lot more often than not. He also offers good perspective on fan overreactions that you just wouldn't normally hear from other ADs. "There's a fine line between being disappointed and being irrational." Well said Jamie.

So glad he made the point about fans saying Prohm underachieved his first year with very similar team that Fred lost with in first round to UAB year prior. I think with all the what-ifs with Fred's tourney teams, people act like we actually did make the Final Four.

Where the what if the charge call isn't made on Clyburn against OSU?
What if Niang doesn't break his foot?
What if we didn't lose to UAB?

I know for the first two most fans say we'd be in the Final Four and Fred even said we'd have won the National Championship if Niang didn't get hurt. People seem to compare our actual results now with the fictional what ifs we had with Fred.

That disappointed vs irrational was so spot on.

No hint in there, though, about the new digital deal with ESPN. I wonder what the AD knew and when he knew it.

Really surprised at how frankly he spoke about Talen and Lindell. Deeply wants the best for them, but pointed out the difference between them and guys who played here for 4 years like Georges, Naz, and Monte.

Interesting to hear Pollard calling out some of his own friends (not by name) for not going to the Big 12 games in KC on Thursday and Friday, but wanting to go on Saturday as examples of how our fan base is at risk of changing to an entitlement mentality.

Really interesting podcast. JP comment, "You don't have to look far to see what you don't want in a head coach." You think he was referring to Fran....
Took it as a generalization about some scummy coaches. Not directed at anyone in particular.

Is it really that fine of a line?

I'm not sure how fine the line is but I've been a Cyclone fan for 50 years and I am amazed how, after a little success, how quickly some of our fans developed a "sense of entitlement".

At time I feel like part of our fan base would fit in better at KU (basketball) and Nebraska (football). Like Pollard I hope our core fanbase will continue to call out the a-holes as they appear.
