I watched the game on TV. So did not see the post game celebration until seeing it posted on cyclones.tv.

It was such a cool moment seeing Gary Thompson carrying the B12 Championship Trophy out to the stage to present to Bowlsby to give to the team! Gary has been such a great supporter and great ambassador for the University. It was great seeming him have the honor of carrying that trophy to the stage!

I have wondered if Gary Thompson's long time involvement with Phillips 66 as an executive and franchisee had anything to do with their long time sponsorship of the Big 12 tournament. Maybe it isn't all that much, but when you consider the long thread through the Big 8/12 and the sponsorship of one of the truly great events in college sports, the Roland Rocket's always been right there.

Here's an old story from a few years ago that talks about it:

P.S. I think their current ad campaign, "Live life to the Full" is pretty clever, but I'm still a Casey's man.

There was a flash on the screen of Gary with the trophy just before the actual ceremony. We were in such a fun loving moment after having won, that when one of our group asked "Was that Gary Thompson with the trophy?" The response came back "Yeah, I think he has gotten senile and is taking the trophy for a souvenir." (Meant as a joke as we are seniors also. No disrespect to Gary)

As I recall, after college Gary played semi-pro basketball for the Phillips 66 team. That is probably when he made the connections for his franchise ownership. Then of course he was color commentator for the Phillips 66 game of the week for many years. Was an excellent commentator.

Loved seeing him recognised!

I hope to god they shoot some new ads for next season. Anytime I see the ad with the single dad and his basketball playing daughter or the lady with the son that “needs his backpack sewn to his back” I immediately mute the tv. It’s not even that they’re that awful of an ad, it’s that they show them over 10 times per game.

In a previous thread about the best to step on to the court at Hilton Coliseum and I said Bridget Carleton but almost said Gary Thompson.

I like the ads. They do a better job of illustrating how the American cultural experience is tied to their cars than any car ad I've seen recently. And that goes double for that awful Mazda "Spread your wings, feel alive" bull **** in that one ad.

But I agree, they do hit you over the head frequently with the two they've been running this season.

Funny thing about those commercials that my wife noticed. All three groups (dad/daughter, mother/daughter and Uber driver ) are all at the gas station getting gas. You have to look closely to notice it.

I did think how it was kind of funny how he just sort of walked up, gave them the trophy and immediately walked away. No hand shaking, no waving, just immediately turned and walked away.

Tyrese tried to shake his hand, but Gary had already walked away. Tyrese was left hanging and did the old air shake.

I just figured out after I saw the commercial with the Uber type driver that the characters from all three commercials are filling up at the same time.

But....don't you want to be Matthew McConaughey and drive a Lincoln?

Gary Thompson was awesome doing color for the Big 8 Conference years ago. Just an outstanding individual.

I wish someone would do some interviews with him. He has so many stories to tell about his time as a broadcaster. KXNO had a couple good interviews with Johnny before he passed, wish they would put them out for fans to hear now.
