Thanks so much to @ruxCYtable for this idea! What are items that you buy generic, and items you never do?

Never generic on the TP. Charmin red. Every time.

Generic soup is gross. Everything else depends on what brand is "generic". We buy a lot of up and up stuff from target but it's almost not on the generic level.

Where they love the governor
Target's Up and Up stuff is usually pretty good, so we'll buy freezer bags, sun screen, band-aids, and the like of those.

Never ever skimp on TP or Puffs Plus. When we first met, my wife would buy the cheapest TP she could get (in her defense, she was a starving PhD student with no money). I would show up with a pack of the stuff to keep her stocked up.

My wife has beat some of her cheapness into me, so I buy a lot of generic medicine. Won't buy generic food.

I agree with a lot of this. I have no problem getting generic ibuprofen or Zyrtec or whatever, but don't want generic toilet paper or most foods. We do have a few exceptions on the food - we will generally get the Fareway or Hy-Vee store bread, as I feel like it's maybe somehow fresher or has fewer preservatives. Shredded cheese and some dairy, we'll occasionally get store brand.

I mean this with zero sarcasm - now THAT is romance!

First of all, big thumbs up for the thread title. Classic!

I'm another one who won't buy cheap TP. My mom does, and I can't figure out why. I will buy lots of Hy-Vee's private label stuff - I find most of it to be just fine. Milk, though....sorry, gotta have A/E. To quote the old Porsche commercial, "There is no substitute."

Bread is another one - I absolutely love Brownberry breads, the 100% whole wheat is my go-to.

Never generic on Ranch dressing, always Hidden Valley.

I do go generic on some food items, such as pasta and canned goods like tomato sauce/paste and such.

I'll buy almost anything generic. I prefer generic cereal over name brand almost all the time. I guess I'd never buy a generic tooth brush or toothpaste...

BTW I saw a really interesting report on Vodka (It was about how Grey Goose is phony made up brand) which described the strict inspection standards for it. Basically all Vodka sold in the US is virtually identical. There is no perceptible different between Grey Goose and 5 O'clock because chemically is has to be the same. It's the same thing as paying more for identical medicine. Sorry suckers.

Is Costco brand paper towels generic? Probably, but they're the best generic paper towels I've used.

I generally will not buy prepared foods generic. But ingredients -- flour, cooking oils, sugar, etc. -- a yes-yes-yes.

Drugs. I won't buy brand-name drugs. Generics are made by major manufacturers, just not the original patent-holder, and the quality and performance seems just as good to me.

Household stuff like bleach, vinegar, ammonia. Bleach is bleach, if you ask me. Ain't payin' for no brand name.

I'm a pretty big fan of Sam's Club's generics. We buy a lot of our non-perishables there -- paper products (yes, even TP), trash bags and yes...

Detergents. There are a lot of generics that are actually pretty darn good. We use Sam's laundry and dish detergent and really like them.

Lastly, if you haven't tried Sam's Club's Member's Mark vodka, you're missing out!

EDIT: Personal care products like soap, shampoo and deodorant. Not making that jump and probably never will. I'm sure there's no logical reason for my thoughts here, but I'm just not putting Hy-Vee deodorant on my pits or Walmart shampoo in my pretty hair.

Anymore I think there is a difference between generic stuff and the house branded stuff. Lots of people mentioning Kirkland, but Target and Hy-Vee house brands are pretty solid for most products, and we'll usually go that route with a few minor exceptions (I agree 100% on the ketchup comment earlier). However, if you drop down to the true generic (weird off-brand stuff) there is usually a huge drop in quality.
