It was at Twana and 50th in Des Moines. Very small creek that crosses under Twana in a culvert. 99% Of the time just a trickle as the creek begins only two blocks away out of a pipe just as it crosses under Aurora. I've lived for 29 years two blocks away and water was 4' deep in front of my house. Way worse than in 2010 or any other time.

I looked up that intersection on Google Maps (street view) -- I can't see any culvert or creek. Can you maybe find it on a map and link?

It's about halfway between 50th and 51st street. Normally the creek is a foot or two wide and both banks are heavily wooded. You have to look hard to ever see water in it.

If you're looking at a satellite view, it's basically in the tree line.

It looks like absolutely nothing! Seems crazy to think that tiny culvert flooded enough to sweep a man away to his death . . and he was found 4 blocks away?!?! So sad.

I was fortunate enough to know Cotman and had him come speak to a coffee group I belong to and bought 2 copies of his book THE BIGGEST ROLODEX IN SPORTS. He had a million stories to talk about in person and in his book. He will be missed very much.

That’s flash flooding in a nutshell. You should look at the videos that people posted of streets flowing like rivers.

I was in the area today and decided to drive through and check it out, along with some of the other flooded areas. If you aren't familiar with the area, I can completely see why someone would think they're OK to drive through some running water on that street. The street kind of dips down right over where the creek bed is, presumably to help contain the creek even when it floods. Because of that dip in the street, the water probably wouldn't look nearly as deep as it actually was, especially considering this was at night in the dark.

With the wooded areas on either side of the street even if his van had gotten picked up by the waters I'm not sure how far it would have even gone from there. But he wouldn't have known that either at the time, so I can understand wanting to get out of the car and try to get to safety.

I lived in that area for a few years but never drove on this particular street. I'm wondering if Larry was familiar with it.

Sad situation all around.

Tragic. He threw some softballs but i still loved his radio shows. He seemed like a really genuine guy too. RIP Cotman.

For those of us not familiar with him, was "Cotman" a nickname for him?

Crazy to see all of the national people giving their condolences (Bilas, Buster Olney, **** Vitale, Franchilla, and many others). And it sounds like he was the nicest guy in real life. RIP Cotman.

Terribly sad. He had a friendly and unassuming voice.

Did he used to co-host the Saturday afternoon show with Mike Newell on WHO?

Just tragic.

I have to imagine that for Drake this is very similar to how the ISU athletic department and fan base felt when Pete Taylor passed away suddenly back in 2003.
