It's about halfway between 50th and 51st street. Normally the creek is a foot or two wide and both banks are heavily wooded. You have to look hard to ever see water in it.
I was in the area today and decided to drive through and check it out, along with some of the other flooded areas. If you aren't familiar with the area, I can completely see why someone would think they're OK to drive through some running water on that street. The street kind of dips down right over where the creek bed is, presumably to help contain the creek even when it floods. Because of that dip in the street, the water probably wouldn't look nearly as deep as it actually was, especially considering this was at night in the dark.
With the wooded areas on either side of the street even if his van had gotten picked up by the waters I'm not sure how far it would have even gone from there. But he wouldn't have known that either at the time, so I can understand wanting to get out of the car and try to get to safety.
I lived in that area for a few years but never drove on this particular street. I'm wondering if Larry was familiar with it.
Sad situation all around.
