The full ride either started in 1996 or 1997, because I know an AHS grad who didn't get one in 1995 (and went to another school that did offer a full-ride for National Merit Scholars), and I know an AHS grad who went to Iowa State on a NMS full ride in 1997.

Hmm. Maybe there wasn't a state residency requirement at that time. There is now, though. It also used to be a full-ride scholarship (I know a couple people who used it); now it seems to just be tuition. I'm guessing they've made it stricter over the years.

My understanding of why Shirley's National Merit Scholarship didn't count against team scholarships: Every Iowa high-schooler who was a National Merit Scholar was eligible for a full-ride academic scholarship from Iowa State. There was no qualitative aspect to it -- his PSAT scores were high...

what are our chances to win against UK?

Nate Silver's NCAA tournament model gives us a 10.5% chance of winning. That seems about right.

Texas at a 9 is a good, good sign.

Do the women deserve a bid to the dance?

Creme's bracketology from late last night hasn't changed anything at the bottom. Iowa State's still the third-from-last in, and all the other bubble teams are in the same slot they were a couple days ago. No wonder, since practically all of the bubble teams lost in the past three days or had...

Do the women deserve a bid to the dance?

Look. I'm not saying UTEP would or should get in ahead of Iowa State. But they've gone 26-3 in a better-than-average conference. Their three losses were by a total of seven points. They haven't had the opportunities to win top 50 games like Iowa State has, but the opportunities they have had...

Do the women deserve a bid to the dance?

They're 26-3 in a mid-major conference (11th out of 31 by RPI). They're 4-1 v. the RPI 51-100 -- better than most of the bubble teams, including the Cyclones. They're not remotely a sure thing, but I can see the possibility of the committee putting them ahead of Iowa State; it's tough to compare...

Do the women deserve a bid to the dance?

If you're looking for other teams to cheer for in their conference tournaments: UWGB and UTEP. UWGB in particular losing would be bad, because the Phoenix are going to be in the tournament regardless. UTEP losing would make them another bubble team.

Do the women deserve a bid to the dance?

    The first eight teams out, according to Creme. North Carolina: RPI 87; 1-9 v. top 25; 0-1 v. 26-50; 4-0 v. 51-100; bad loss 245; done for season USC: RPI 30; 1-5 v. top 25; 2-1 v. 26-50; 6-2 v. 51-100; no bad losses; playing 125 this evening (PAC-12 tourney) Michigan: RPI 45; 0-4 v. top...

Do the women deserve a bid to the dance?

I'm going to transfer my posts from the KSU game over here. They might help to clarify. --- Now that Jerry Palm's quit (who was the better of the two), the only major women's bracketologist I know of is Charlie Creme. He has ISU in as the third-to-last team in the tournament. Presumably they'll...

Hosting isn't supposed to have an impact on getting into the NCAAs. That doesn't mean it's not in the back of their minds, however, especially with the powerhouse attendance numbers Iowa State gets. Now that Jerry Palm's quit (who was the better of the two), the only major women's...

    3/6 Bracketology

Basically, their RPI is being brought down somewhat artificially by just how subterranean the bottom half of their schedule is. Of their 31 games, 14 were against sub-200 teams. Five of those were against sub-300 teams. (For comparison, Iowa State's schedule, which was no great shakes outside of...
